I got a few more things installed and working...important stuff like the package tray, a sound system, and cruise control.

So I had to go for another test drive, it was a nice night out, temp in the 80s, engine stayed 180 or less almost all the time (went up a little when I stopped for gas on the way home). Cruise works well, the amp that I installed in the old Corvair AM radio case works decent, I can hear it fine in the single 6x9 speaker. There's a bit of alternator whine, but I can live with it. I checked gas mileage, right at 15 the last two tanks, which is pretty good for an old car for me.

Does your amp have L & R capability?

It has one speaker, so I only connected one channel...although the amp itself is stereo.

Perhaps a dual cone dual channel speaker is in the cards in the near future? This one fit directly into the 210 57 perfectly. The sound quality is very good for all that it is. 8203EADA-D2A3-408E-A9C6-74355F2BFC2E.jpeg

I'm fine with mono lo fidelity.... since there's only one channel on the volume control, another speaker won't do any good

  7. The problem is if you have a stereo signal but no way to switch into a mono mode, half of the sound is disappearing. There used to be mono/stereo switches on most amps/radios, but they went away a long time ago. If you try to connect both channels to one speaker coil, you'll kill the amp and/or the speaker. Now, if all you're listening to is AM it won't matter but it will on FM stereo signals.

I only hear one channel, but most music is fine that way. There are some old songs, like some mid 60s Beatles, that has instruments on one channel and voice on the other, and some songs like Moby Dick and Moving in Stereo where they move the sound from one side to the other and back, that sound weird with only one channel.

But I can live with it. Having a crappy sound system is a way of life with my old cars.

Jim custom autosound makes a speaker with two speakers in it. I've used them and sold them, they work well.

Custom Autosound 6x9 Dash Speaker - Dual Dash Mount

    Item #: 1006

    1 Question & 1 Answer
    $45.00
    In Stock

    Description
The 1006 Custom Autosound dual dash mount speakers are designed to replace OEM speakers generally held in-place by screws. These speakers give you stereo sound from your original mono locations. This 6 inch by 9 inch mount features two 4 Inch, 100 Watt Speakers designed to align and mount in your factory speaker location. If you have an original 8 or 10 ohm radio, you may still use this speaker, but you will have to wire it in series and may or may not have to add an inline resistor. Please be careful when using with an original mono radio as improper wiring may fry your original, 8 or 10 ohm radio.

I wonder how one of the “FM converters” would work with that radio/amp?
My dad had a friend that put one in pickup. I remember him saying it still wasn’t “real FM”. Played like AM, but received the FM stations.

Yeah, this was when the high beam light was like a billboard, and wasn't blue yet.

I'm good with my mono stereo, no changes needed.

That's the second person to mention a reverb. :)

A front and a back speaker, right? Like we had in the 61 Impala many years ago...

yup, that is how you get the "echo/ auditorium" sound. I had one in a 66 Chevelle when I was a teenager....

Reverbs are fine, until you go over railroad tracks at high speed.:D

I actually find that a bit ironic...considering the mission of the HAMB.

My old Lady was the driver. Does that count?

That’s how the red 56 is set up. It also has the speakers I mentioned. Fading to less front speaker is a must if you wanna hear the sounds from the package tray better. Unique sounding coming from opposing corners for sure.

  27. Did they have reverb in Corvettes? Seems like rear speaker wouldn't be far enough away to get the delay/ concert hall sound.

There's no rear speaker in an old Corvette.

No need for anything but a dash speaker in an open car. It’s all I have in my 56 Victoria because I wouldn’t cut any holes in the tray or foot covers…. At 79 and 45 years in power plants I can’t hear s**t anyway…..
