1 to 1-1/2” at the end of the road, 1/2” in the pits from the SCTA website at 5:30… No work today. I’m not worried at all. Weather shows nothing for over a week but sunshine. Mid 80’s for the beginning of the week the low 90’s at the end…

    2023 SPEEDWEEK UPDATES
    Update #5 – 8/2/23:
Due to the weather last night, we made a trip to the salt at 5:30 this morning. There is approximately
a 1”-1 ½” of water at the end of the road and a ½” in the pits. We have instructed everyone to stay off
the salt today. The sun is out and there is a nice breeze blowing the water around. We are staying
positive about having the event, although it may be delayed a little bit. At 3:00 this afternoon we will
be going out to inspect the salt again and will come back and update you.

  5. IF it doesn't get further rain tonight and tomorrow. Big if.....
Will watch and see. I may delay leaving a day or two.

No match for the mighty 90... IMG_4172.JPG

  8. The key is not to panic. That is a minor amount of water in the scheme of things. It could blow MILES to the NE and never be seen for weeks.

And if it does blow out and the sun does it's thing, The Salt will have an ideal surface. Fingers crossed. And good luck to all.

we got as far as Browning MT. Got news from our crew down there. They packed up and are heading home. We turned west and are enjoying hot dogs at Costco in Kalispell. Spend some time in the woods and water. Try again next time.

The guys with the Honda 90's and mini-bikes; do you need a permit from Utah Parks or Land Management to run them on the Salt area?

  13. YES, you are supposed to have ORV permits

It might be a challenge to get a permit unless you can get one at the states port of entry stop or at a license office. No short term permit either from what it reads.

I've got an old bicycle with a motor on it that I had planned to take to Bonneville to run around on rather than driving what ever i take down the next time i go but their rule make me wonder about that.

  17. A few years ago the BLM started making a big deal out of anything motorized running around the spectator areas and in the pits. The folks in the Ford pickup that were killed made it even worse.

Trip started out great…went to pick up our trailer and found a separated casing on a tire so the first stop was for a new set. We loaded up and are ready to leave at 3am tomorrow. Our grandson Tyler and his girlfriend are meeting us in Wendover. He gets the seat as a “rookie” and as much driving as he wants. Hoping for a lot of fun… IMG_5853.jpeg IMG_5852.jpeg

  21. So, if it's not an ORV, but a licensed 2 wheeler, we're good to run?

    Latest from SCTA:
    Update #6 – 8/3/23:
The water has diminished greatly, and it is almost dry in the pits. Our plan is to give it another day to dry out and go back to work Friday and Saturday. If all goes well the Driver’s Meeting and Racing will begin on Sunday or Monday. All weather reports after tonight look excellent. We will check on the salt in the morning and update you again.

I don't understand why some people can't go along with whatever they found to be determined as to what should be what they want. If that's the rule, go along with it or go home.

Some of us walk around. Some take a required vehicle to go from one end to the other. This event was not designed for your convenience.

It's a world-wide event that take months and hours to put on without having to listen to folks whining about how they would and should do it.

Yep … If you can do better do it! No one is stopping you from getting the permits and organizing a speed event at Bonneville.

Comparing the camera view to images from before the storm, it looks like the water is nearly down to the base of the post. I bet it dries up a lot today.

  30. The areas where the camera is and Lands end are low. There are many times we drive thru water to get to the dry stuff yards out towards the pits and starting line area.
