I'm not really into powerboats, but drag boats seem to be a bit like Altereds- you basically have to be insane to drive one.

  5. Have to check em out at the book store.
    Thanks for the info.
As far as magazine content. I’m cool with just about anything new or old. The tech articles turning into infomercials is what killed em for me.
    and the internet.

Funny, I got the urge to have some sort of paper subscription again and signed up just a week or two ago

Best deal I could find was $20 for 2 years on magazineline.com. I just subscribed. I'm not a digital magazine guy - being old school and just plain old, I prefer the paper magazine in my hands.

  14. I am 45 years old in about a week I have been collecting vintage hot rod magazines since I was 16. (I am cheap and I like the thrill of the hunt so it's swap meets or estate sales no eBay for magazines because that would ruin it) Anyways hot rod in my opinion has three eras
    1) the pre 1964 pretty much all the issues are good And you could argue they are a HAMB pictorial Bible for style
    2) then there is the 1964ish through 1979, lots of drag racing, a few muscle cars and for a few years it's mixed with rod and custom so there are hot rods and There are vans all of which are very different from one another but you could argue a van was the custom car of the late 1970s muscle cars are all about horsepower same thing with drag racing so the magazine worked pretty well even if I am not into funny cars or rear engine dragsters.
    3) then in the 3rd era the mag gets into what I consider the modern era of hot rod magazine which is around 1980 or '81 to the current day. I buy the magazine here and there but I will be honest I'm not a big fan of it It has really lost something since the earlier issues I don't wish it to go away by any means but I will be honest I probably won't notice if it's gone, so we have maybe 4 issues over the last 40 years that a traditional hot rodder would call excellent they are the one mentioned in this thread (that I did not know existed until about 5 minutes ago Now I got to find it lol) is one of them, in the early 2000s, Mark (of the Shifters CC fame) and his Purple People Eater is another issue since it pretty much spawned the traditional hot rod revival to the mainstream. The 50th anniversary issue is pretty important in my opinion and I think that's about it.

The magazine I truly miss is Rod & Custom It was an excellent magazine no matter what year (sure the 1990s were full of billet rods that a young 15-year-old me could never afford that I thought were pretty ugly but) The tech was good and the cars were the sign of the era and those cars helped keep our hobby alive Love them or hate them they are street rod history. I miss the vintage tin issues, or issues that focused on just model A's or Model t's or 32 Fords or the iconic 40 coupe or Street rod type event coverage.
Hot Rod magazine has never really had hot rod tech, yeah it has lots of building engine articles, same goes with transmissions and even axles But it was always lackluster on the hot rod specific tech And it rarely if ever focused on a strict 48 older hot rod show. I will not be subscribing.
What magazine I probably should pick up again that I haven't touched in quite a few years is ol skool rodz. I got pretty tired of seeing the rat rod type stuff so I quit buying the magazine My buddy tells me they now have paint and are more refined so perhaps I should give it another shot.

Couldn't find one at any of the local magazine stands, had to get mine on E-Bay. Cheaper than the news stand. Worth every penny. McGee roadster, my all time favorite.

Well-lll.... this might be old news already as I just got the November issue in the mail yesterday. So if you haven't already, get the October issue while you still can.... ;)
Granted, there's O/T stuff but some cool things tucked in the 11/23 edition like this Deuce coupe from Preston Tucker's great-grandsons:

And Power Tour coverage - again, plenty that's O/T for here but it's a great overview.

    Support old school print!!

No. I may pick up the issue and use the blow in to subscribe but with the exchange rate and extra postage I probably won’t...

  21. Tried to buy one at the airport for my trip to Europe, no go, good thing I have some from the last swap meet.
