I didn't expect to like the pinstripes but I think they actually work really well! Nicely done!

  4. Thanks for the support. It might take a bit more convincing around my world but, I think it's subtle cool. Best jobsite line so far, 'Did you give the neighbourhood kids a package of sharpies on the weekend'. What do you expect from a bunch of heathens with no Car Kulture.

  5. More pinstripe pics after I took it to a little mini meet last night. Took the jamb nut off the booster pushrod to see if that gets the last of the brake rub out. On to the next item.

  6. Nothing to report on the Father and Sons project other than the Father is currently working on the Son's project. Oh, I got a set of 1-3/4" Port-a-walls to put on the front. I wanted the 3" but, lots of storys of them flapping in the wind. Going to pop one on the blackwall side for a visual. If not quite enough I can grind the white letter side then put these on to fill back to the rim. Pretty cheapskate.

  7. Took my winger 'Wally' McWallface in the Sheepdog Shop Truck. Got a seatbelt through his harness and off we went. A bench seat doesn't quite cut it.

  8. Got caught in the rain yesterday cruising so turned on the wipers which promptly ripped up the rubber blades. Went to the local Canadian Tire to search - I had a good attitude. Ended up opening about 15-20 packages (no packaging wrecked as all plastic resealable). Examining clips while searching for metal wiper arms that don't look like they came off Battlestar Galactica took a while. Got a few questions from employees and a couple of good lucks. Popped the clips off the new and swapped the clips from my old. Done deal!

  9. Someone mentioned questionable metallurgy with British brakes. Stomped the brakes today in an bit of an emergency move and it pulled hard right. Got home pulled front driver's side wheel off and noticed brake fluid running down the tire. Checked every flare and after all that I sprayed rotors with brake cleaner. Nice and dry then rotated the rotor and got a smear of fluid. Lights on I notice brake fluid seeping at joint between front and back of caliper. Checking them they felt like they were at maybe 10-20 ft lbs - way less than I torqued them I initially. I guess pads won't wear out if you keep them good and lubed.

  10. Pulled it all apart and it looks like a Chicken and Egg thing. Suspect the caliper got too hot during a highway run when I had some brake drag going on a few weeks back. Looks like that may have melted the seals on the pistons and they then started leaking and it all rolled downhill from there. Run 'em, break 'em, fix 'em.

  13. Brakes are still down and ended up buying a polisher - logical. My kid's roof has flashed enough so figured we jump on it. His car was in the rain so went after our truck. Damn that was a lot of work but, it has never shined like that before. The roof was an orange peeled mess but, she's shinin' now.

  14. Brakes come in Tuesday. Went to the last Cars and Coffee of the season this am and saw a couple of cars with machine polish marks that even on our garbage paint would not be acceptable. Last weekend we machine polished and got it pretty good but, today running my hands all over, the surface contaminants make it feel like shark skin. Grabbed the 1000 grit and wet sanded the whole truck then repolished. Not sure where the guy I have become came from because I wanted a scruffy shop truck. I'm now satisfied we have it looking as good as it can be without a complete repaint. I need some chrome reverse wheels bad and nice whitewalls to hit the look I'm after.

Commentary on today's C&C. Looked up and realized it had become a BMW and Supercar meet and before I could get myself out of there I noticed a young kid with a Mini Cooper had his hood open and about a dozen guys were standing in front of it. Kid had blown up his motor and slung another in there along with whatever he could get his hands on to make it faster. It was the most clapped out rusted car today but, because it was home built even the Visa Card car guys appreciated it. Study in personalities. Too bad Clementine was down because that little POS was the star of the moment.

  15. Holiday today so while the front end is up in the air I dug into the transmission to see if I can get it to shift better before replacing it. Transmission is a 1968 T-18 according to the tag. The shift detain pin is a chunk of drill bit. Pulled the top loader and looked in the case noting the low lube level and a chunk of gear tooth sitting on top of a gear. Doesn't get more agricultural than using a drill bit as a pin. I don't know beans about T18's but, it doesn't look too complex. Our pickup's road manners are pretty cranky so I don't think I can make it worse by fiddling with it.

  16. She's back together again. I know a lot more about Jag brakes given this is the 2nd round. Bolts are meant to be safety wired and the need to align shims, brackets and caliper in order to get 2 bolts in was maddening but, bleed tomorrow and back on the road, until the crappy weather hits at least.

  18. Ran through the truck tightening a few bolts and fixing some rattles last week. It ran pretty solid today except for a puff of smoke at start up I've never seen before. Shifted reasonably well too. I put insurance on until the end of December so will run it as long as I can. This winter if I can justify, I might start into the engine and if the motor comes out, the trans is a goner too. Have a boat load of non auto projects going down right now so truck is on slow play. Looking out the window the rain is predicted to hit soon. Out I go for a cruise to walk the dog before it dumps. Love this old truck business!

    EDIT.
Would you get white upholstery if you had this guy for a roommate?

That seems to be the way of it Will. Once they're running and driving, the work slows down.
I'd just throw an El cheapo parts store seat cover on there for the furry friends. It can be taken off and washed, saving the main upholstery.
The puff of smoke...most likely a loose valve guide/ bad guide seal. Do a compression check, and if all the holes are reasonably close...drive it. If it were rings, it would smoke all the time, especially under load.
I had a '76 C10 years ago on which the guides were so bad, I could guarantee a big cloud on startup. Drove it for a long time before finally fixing it. One time, I was parked next to a couple at the Foster's Freeze, sitting in their car eating their lunch...windows down. As we were getting ready to leave, I said to wifey..."Uh-oh. Watch this..."
Gave em a big ol' cloud. Wife and I laughed and laughed. But we felt a bit bad about it, at least.

  20. Thanks Mike,
Good idea on the head related possibilities, I have an exhaust leak too that clatters pretty good under load so I back off the throttle and cruise it. I have a quote to redo the head but, have been thinking Promaxx potentially as an option to porting and polishing and, and....
Ebb and Flow. I get it which is the reason I chuck the dog in, throw on my, Sunny Disposition straw hat, and off I go when I can.

The Promax head, I think is a very good option. Especially once the cost of installing guides and all new valves to tallied up. I'm considering getting one too, even though my stuff is fresh. Reason being my existing head does not have hard seats for unleaded fuel.
But then figuring in my age, and the amount of mileage I actually put on the ol' Furd, it'll most likely last longer than I will!
Keep on with that sunny disposition Will! Hat or no hat

  22. Ha, ha, you bet Man! It's a template we should all run with. If it doesn't serve you - Ditch that Shit. Now the Promaxx, I know myself - If I don't get the best potential for the project - it will bug me.

  23. Haven't been up to much lately. Driving our pickup daily and thinking about what I can do next when some funds come available. A major hunk is missing out of the top portion of our steering wheel hub. Today I found a wheel locally for a 1960 Ford Sunliner. Limited production car so limited production wheel. I wanted a 1940 wheel but, so many have done that one already. Begging to be different, how many would know what this wheel was from if they looked through the window and saw this? The wheel to column base ring is an issue but, Maybe not.

  24. No build updates but, how about 'The Working Hot Rod Segment'. Met a subcontractor on site yesterday and he said, 'Where is this truck I keep hearing about?" It came up in conversation on another site for a different builder. He mentioned he was coming to my site and a full blown chat came up about, Ya gotta ask Will about his truck. It turns out there were some guys there that used to work with me. Small world. Then someone at a local Building Supply last week saw a '66 F100 parked there so that photo got sent to me. In the area I live and work there is nothing older than 5 yrs old so it's a rare beast doing daily driver duty. The dolly tied to the bumper was quite the sensation. Had to drag a 300-400 lbs base for a basketball hoop off our customer's lot down the street. The neighbours took a video and I had to explain what the caper was all about. I'm sure a photo will end up beside the video of the goat sitting on the lap of a dude riding a motorcycle at some point down the line.

That steering wheel is pretty cool. Different, yet no so glaring that it look out of place.
What about the horn contact ring and turn signal cancel pin on the back side?
Is it similar? Or are just gonna do without?

  27. I have a horn button wired up under the dash edge like a door bell. I am getting used to manually shutting it off although I realized my fix actually cancels like it should. I like the Chev Impala wheels and 40's Ford but, Subtle is more my thing.

  29. So I believe ya gotta haul your own shit. Seemed to have hit my weight allowance at the building supplier. 7 sheets of 5/8 ply and 10 pcs 2 x 4 - 10'. Looking closer at our carport I was revolted at the sight - hard to believe we built a truck in that. Will remedy shortly.

Good on ya for usin' your truck like a truck!
