Loukas & Preising, I’m pretty sure Neil Leffler was involved with this car earlier. Karamesines and Maynard did their engines at that time, that was the connection for them to get a Speed Sport scoop.
It’s been restored and I saw it at Cordova about twenty years ago.

Powers & Riley, they were out of Iowa, after a series of altereds they ran T/F for years. The car in the photo was a 426 Wedge on fuel. I can’t remember if they were the first or not but they invented a reverser to allow backing up after the burnout.

    .
Sponsored by Speed Sport it’s not the guys from Arizona. Joe Bush was a Speed Sport member, he sponsored cars for the Speed Sport team in Arizona but followed Don Maynard to Chicago when he came to work with the Greek. Joe ran a speed shop in a couple of different locations here and if you look close the car is lettered Speed Sport- Chicago.
Looks like a clone of my favorite car the Greek ran, his ‘63 Rod Stuckey car.

Didn’t 3” Gilmer belts first come out around this time, or maybe a bit later Marty?

I didn’t recognize this rail but then I thought one name lettered below the headers was Moritz- bingo, that’s the team of Moritz & McClintock. After dragsters they went on to campaign funny cars.

    Hello,
Look at the FED in the next area of the staging grounds. The wider 3 inch belts were out in late 59 and were for the big motors. The Isky Gilmer belt drives only came out later in early 1960 for the SBC motors. We were able to get one of the early versions. So, when the drives for the smaller motors came out, there were other versions for the original larger motor applications.

It takes all kinds to compete and win eliminations.

That roll bar might save those valuable carburetors for his survivors.

What engine is that? It looks like a crossflow headed, open OHV rocker arms banger?

Dig the pressure pump at the front axle. Minimalist.

And about as much setback as one could have. Looks like the clutch can musta bolted up to the center section.

    Hello,

We all love watching the top fuel dragsters in the old days or at the local Cacklefests throughout the So Cal experiences. But, some of the exciting classes were for those that had smaller motors, flatheads or SBC motors with injectors or carbs.
    upload_2023-8-14_2-23-22.png
As time went by, those classes were just as popular as the top gas dragsters. Some dragstrips made special classes just for Flathead dragsters. Other dragstrips included SBC and 4 cylinder motors in the lower letter classifications.

For the nice sounds that the competition race cars made, it was still exciting drag racing. They just did not have 671 superchargers or multiple motors to go fast in their classes. In this case, the little guys prevailed in their own classes until the day came when all classes other than top fuel were “gone with the wind.” YRMV

MRDV. There are still a bunch of NHRA dragster and Econo Dragster and Nostalgia Dragster and Top Dragster classes which encompass everything from unblown nitro burning V8s to mini fours - some turbocharged, Econo dragsters on carbs, Nostalgia FEDs, Top Dragsters, and a myriad of local vintage FED and altered index races.
