My deepest sympathy to you and all of Mikes family and friends.
As we all age it becomes more and more frequent losing good friends and family. It’s a very lonely feeling.

  6. So sorry to hear of Mr. Young's passing. I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago at the Leadsled Spectacular when he was washing his incredible '60 Impala. He was a very nice guy and didn't mind a couple of us drooling over his car while he was wiping it down. Seeing that Chevy cruise down the street was a treat for the eyes I'll never forget.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed. Vaya Con Dios Mr. Young..........E

True friends like that are hard to come by and when you lose one, it’s tough. You never really “get over it” so to speak. We shouldn’t really. Over time though, I’ve found myself being thankful that I was fortunate enough to have a friend like you speak of here. Can’t put a value on something like that. Truly sorry for your loss.

I read about his passing on Saturday in the local news and found it incredibly sad that neither Chuy's website or any of their social media mention his passing at all.

I'd see him at Austin events with his various cars and regret not introducing myself. He sounds like not only a visionary, but great guy who loved his family.

Prayers for his family and friends.

  11. I didn't know he was ill. My condolences. I thought about him the other day when I heard a Chuy's will be built about 2 miles from my house. RIP.

I don't know this for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was by request. Mike wasn't big on publicity... Also, he sold Chuy's years ago.

Mike's passing has been pretty big news in Austin though. It's all over the news.

  14. Condolences on the loss of your friend, Ryan. A comforting statement made at a funeral for a friend I attended recently:
“The candle may go out, but the memory of its light remains.”

It's never easy to lose a great friend, its not supposed to be an easy thing!
At this stage of the game, all you can do is be dam grateful and appreciative of the time you got to spend with him !
He lives on, in your memories and, and in all of the hearts of those that he influenced!

  16. That's sad to hear. I never knew the man, but I always had deep respect for his taste in cars. He always had great style.

Wow. Thanks for tell a bit of his story, Ryan. His cars are incredible, but I'm sure your recounting your side of the relationship will be special to his family as well. It's often nice to hear how those you love are thought of by other people.

I didn't know Mike well, but I enjoyed the time we spent on the phone when I was writing stories about his cars, talking about everything from lowriders in Harlingen to working with Joe Perez on the amazing interior in his '48 Buick.

When he and the Austin crew came to Baltimore for the TRJ car show 10 years ago, they were hell bent on getting crab cakes. To get to the best joint in town required a drive through some of the nicest and some of the worst neighborhoods in Baltimore, and those guys could have cared less. I'll never forget rolling through town looking in my rearview at Gary Howard in the Exotica, Mike in his Buick, Lee in his (now Ryan's) shoebox...I think Steve drove his Cadillac that year and Reggie was in his '36. I knew it was a legendary sight at the time, but even more so now. I feel pretty fortunate to have spent a little time with those guys.

Really sucks to lose old friends. Sorry for your loss Boss and for all his old friends.
(I suspect he was the Mike who had one of the first 3 HAMB join numbers?)

Ryan, you are special, and you are somebody. It sounds like your friend Mike saw qualities in you that he admired as much as those you saw in him. You were blessed to have such a friend and I'm sorry for your loss.

So sorry for the loss of your friend. I’m at the age where that is happening far too often.

I unfortunately never got to meet him but always admired his taste in cars. Got to work on the Exotica once and have a very cherished piece of its original paint job. Rest in peace Mike.
