Technical New tool. Dent removal possible metal shaping.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by anthony myrick, Aug 14, 2023.

  1. Got a new tool at school. Got to play with it some today. It will move the crap out of sheet metal.

it’s a “rotary hammer” for paint less dent repair but it will move a good bit of metal. Should be able to shape with it.
Came with this kit with longer versions and a super strong suction cup set up.

close up on the different ends for it.

    has a shaping mallet.
Curious what could be done to shape a part with this. I guess part of the battle would be holding a panel.

Now you are going to have to show us how that actually works.

  3. Just got it.
I’m curious what it can do.
We used it on a small dent today in a scrap part and it moved a lot of metal. We over worked it in just seconds. Got my brain gears turning on what it could do shaping a part.

Are we seeing that right? Is it like a die grinder with a funny shaped thingie on it? (That's a highly technical term, thingie...)

  5. Good description
A rotary tool or fancy die grinder with a threaded end you can change the heads.
You can lock the tool like a regular grinder to change em.

  6. We have a panel shaping bag.
I guess I need to bring a piece of metal and see if this thing moves metal like I think it could.

  8. I have these welding practice pieces. 20 gauge.
    Stretched this in seconds.

That's interesting. The heads look like the knobs on my sink. How many RPMs does it spin, is it average die grinder speed? This could be very useful, I'd like to hear more about it.

  11. Not sure. I’m trying to look up stuff on it.
    I’m curious.
Could this be used to rough shape damage and work with a shrink disc.
Pre stretch for a bead roller in a curve?
Could it be used to massage hammer formed panels in conjunction with a dolly on the other side?

  12. I could see hammering in a shape with an MDF female pattern

I'm with the rest of the guys, figure this thing out and post some vids ! Lol

Is it hard on the hands? Having it beat metal while holding it seems like it could get tiresome in a hurry.

  14. I’d recommend gloves. Vibration type. But probably no worse on the hands than swinging a hammer. It does create heat.
    Those test spots got warm.

  15. Looks like it could really screw stuff up fast if your not careful

also looks like it could do a lot of good once you figure it out .

    neat

What’s it called ? Gotta be some YouTube videos on its use

  16. A body work hack like me could destroy a lot of stuff with that. In Anthony’s hands, it will work magic!

  17. I’ll just mess up faster.
But I’ve got good at fixing my screw ups

  18. Not sure what this kit that was donated cost. It came from another program that was shut down. :(
    But this is priced reasonable

  19. Looks almost like portable Pull Max only without the limitations of a base anvil. I'd use my shot bag for a backer and hold on tight. Looks like fun.

  20. That’s the plan.
    We’ll see

  21. I wonder if tools like those would work on heavier gauge metal of the older cars. Maybe you guys could practice on a shovel since that’s more like the metal used back then.

You mean you have 52 bodies and 50 might be students:D

    That's a darn good percentage!

So it’s like metal bumping but at a high speed? I’m guessing you sorta sneak up on the dent to push it up. Interesting for sure. I would love to learn more PDR techniques to help with metalfinishing.

Every piece of early ford metal I have worked on was pretty much 19 gauge but closer to 20 than 18. Aside from firewalls. I’ve never understood the “old metal was thicker” idea. To me, 18 is thick, 20 is adequate. I usually repair with 20.

  28. Played with it on a dent today. It’s variable speed and you control the pressure.
You can ruin or stretch a dent very fast.

Anthony, good luck for the year...

  30. Thanks. Gonna need it. Biggest class I’ve had so far.
Largest group of young ladies as well.
All the college level collision classes in our area closed. That stinks but I got a ton of stuff from the one closest to us. That’s where this dent removal set came from. Plus a huge paintless dent removal pic set
A larger frame machine and a pro-spot resistance welder.
