The chuck in the middle with the mounted roller bearings, not the left boring head, not the right Jacobs drill chuck. If the one in the middle [looks about 5" dia.] has an R8 stub [same as collets] then it must go in spindle. My guess would be to center cylindrical items to spindle before clamping item to table or if Morse taper then maybe goes in tailstock of lathe to swage tubing up or down. Just curious. ;)

  3. I will ask about it. My friend mentioned it saying I would never need it. I'm curious to. I will get a answer.

  4. It's to center the slip end on armatures in a lathe.

we just had a chuck in the tailstock that looked like a jacobs--but the three jaws were brass!

  7. I have two machinist friends that just retired. They plan on bringing a bunch of tooling. In exchange they can use the mill when they want. They will also show me some tricks and complex machining. It will be fun to make some chips like a pro.

Congrats on the mill and especially all of that tooling that came with it. I have found mills in the past but never one with enough tooling to make it worth while. The mill should prove very useful in your shop!

  9. It surely will be handy. I usually need one at 1am. No more waiting till morning and running to a friend's house. I can't wait to make some cool stuff.

What a car! If people only knew what you go through to make this happen.....
Also, I see the old Madsen distributors truck is still around. Is Mark still among us?

  12. This coming Sunday I will be at the Lannon car show in downtown Lannon Wisconsin. It's a really nice car show with all of the proceeds going to the local charities. There are always nitro cars firing up twice. Last year a hydrogen peroxide rocket car showed up. The X-1 owned by Pete Farnsworth set many records in its day.

  13. I have not seen one of those since I was a kid. York US 30 drag way. Saw several run there, a LONG time ago.

  14. I forgot to mention the Lannon show brings in a thousand cars.

  15. I was hoping to see you and the coupe at Byron for the Glory Days this year. Did you have other plans, or are you holding off for the drag n drive events?

  16. I had too much going on plus my main crew man was out of town. I will be at the lannon show this weekend. It's possible next week making a few hits at the Grove.

  17. It's been a busy few weeks. I went to the show on main street Union Grove followed by Gusses drive in East Troy. Then today I went to the friends of Broadway Bob luncheon at the Blue Badger truck stop. It's a get together for racers and fans of the Grove. Danny Sullivan brought his jet car and fired it up. I fired mine on nitro. Al McFadyen brought his blown alcohol coupe. Truckers and customers were shocked to say the least. When I came home to get ready for the Area 41 drags this weekend I found this during routine maintenance. This isn't good. Luckily I have two spares. They just need to be honed to size. I can do that tomorrow. Always something. Between all the action with the coupe I got the nos quarter on the 66 chevelle. I can't show pics of that. 20230816_135918.jpg 20230816_140058.jpg 20230816_194819.jpg 20230816_194833.jpg

    Brian,
Does that happen often with the rocker arms?
    Can they be rebushed?

  19. 20230817_111711.jpg It happens when it gets hot street driving it. I was trying some new things that didn't work out.
The bushings can be replaced. I had some extra on the shelf. After instalation they need to be honed. I needed to take out .004 to get them on the shaft. My good friends at Don's Speed Shop in Kenosha WI did the work as soon as the doors opened today.

  21. Nice easy pass today 5.01 at 147 mph. Timing was at 35 degrees 80 percent in the tank. I just changed head gaskets going from .90 thick to .050 this is a huge change. Plugs looked good so tomorrow I have 40 degrees of lead. That will wake it up.

  23. I saw a couple of your passes at the Area 41 drags today and yesterday. It's too bad the traction looked to be lacking for all the high power cars like yous. The track staff could have done better at preping the track in my opinion, but it was a fun weekend.

  24. It was fun. On pass two it shook the tires hard. I had to lift once but still ran 5.12. On pass three I ran it on gas to a 5.84

I have received calls from two friends widows in the last week wanting to clear out some of their tools. It's nice they thought of me to get their shop equipment. They don't know what to do with it and they don't want strangers coming over or listing it on ebay. The first pile of item came from a retired machinist. The second pile I have to go get in southern Illinois this weekend. Anything I won't use or is doubles to what I already own will be donated to a young up and coming local hot rodder or machinist.

  26. Next up the fall out drags in two weeks. Routine maintenance showed the springs are shot. Pressure is down to 240# on the intakes. That will keep a blown engine from revving up to its potential. The first time it fires up with the new springs set at 1.95 installed height with 350# the difference can be heard. It will sound much crisper. Nothing like new springs. I can check the pressure on the head and change springs on the car. Having the specialty tools to do the job makes all the difference.

  27. I'm back from southern Indiana. I got alot of tools from my friend. A huge air compressor to run the sand blaster; wire welder; barn fan and many other tools. I told his widow I'm honored to have the items. They had spoke prior to his passing and he insisted I could have what ever I wanted. I felt creeped out going through his things until she told me that. Thank you jett.
Back on the 31. I found number 4 cylinder leaking 45 percent last time out. I pulled the head and put new valves in and put it back on. Re leaked still 45 percent. I pulled both heads and changed the springs. I pulled the pan to remove number 4. I found a broken stuck second ring. I have the parts to fix it. It's a matter of time to have it at the fall out drags this Friday. Let the thrash begin. 20230910_194432.jpg

  28. For the next few outings all of the street items will be removed. Water; radiator; passenger seat; oil cooler; alternator; water lines etc. It should be fun.
