Technical Looking for fuse block ideas for my '49 F1 project, starting from scratch

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by kilohertz, Jan 27, 2021.

  1. If you are going to scratch build a harness decide how many circuits you need and then go to an auto-parts store and buy a universal fuse block that fits your needs.

Keep it simple and don't over think it.

Thanks again for all the excellent ideas, so many really great thoughts, much appreciated.

I have made up a list of all the ccts I envision needing, with amperage and whether they are switched or not. As I have been into electronics my whole life, I won't need to buy much more than the panel, I have a plethora of wire, connectors, crimps etc. already. Boxes of relays and fuses too. I prefer the blade fuses now, although if I find the right glass module I will use it. I have a lead on a few different ones now, my friend says he has a Painless unit, just needs to find it, I have found a few that look very usable, I like this Wurth unit, see attached. I would prefer one that has the connections on the back, rather than open screw terminals like on the Painless...I'm not in a hurry so I have some time to look around and decide what will work well. I may split it into 2 boxes as well. Again Wurth has a few smaller ones like in the link, all from Digikey and reasonably priced.

    More later, thanks again.

    Cheers

  3. "This harness has 12 Fuses and 14 Circuits. Its perfect for your Hot Rod, Street Rod, Custom or Muscle Cars and Trucks that require fewer circuits. This kit has 11 circuits for lights, gauges, radio, radio constant-cell phone charger, wiper, ac-heat, motor, and third brake light, plus 3 open circuits for whatever you might want to add such as power windows and doors, etc. KIT COMES WITH HEADLIGHT CONNECTORS, 4 1/4 TURN SIGNAL CONNECTOR AND FLOOR DIMMER CONNECTOR."

    9 fused, 2 keyed and 1 hot.

I'm back! Finally have some time.

After a few years of other projects, I am back working on the '49 F-47 and am ready to start the wiring. I have selected the under dash fuse panel and am now trying to find a combo relay/fuse box for under the hood to supply power to various higher current items. I would like at least 4 relays, 5 pin type and at least 4 regular blade fuse ATO type in a weatherproof box. All I can find are the mini fuse type and they are only rated for 30A.

Here is the under dash fuse center.

Has anyone found ATO/relay fuse blocks out there? If so could you please let me know where?

    Thanks

I got this for 20ish bucks from Amazon, works great, and is easy to wire.
As a bonus - if a fuse is burned, the LED next to it will light up.

We used to use some plastic weatherproof electrical boxes for mounting radio remote relays on boom trucks. While we used fairly large versions; the supplier had smaller ones also. Think it would be pretty easy to find a size to mount a few relays and maxi fuses. They were grey; but a coat of matte black would blend them in.

This may be what I will have to do if I can't find a commercially built one. My primary fuse panel will be here next week and I'll be wiring the ignition and such first. I have some time to come up with a solution for under the hood.

    Thanks for the idea.

Years ago whilst surfing the net I found a cool, vintage, marine electrical panel. It had a lightning bolt on the cover and it became the model for my under seat panel. The only change I would make if I did it again would be a handle to turn to latch and unlatch the cover rather than my wing nut. But it works.
