Hot Rods HIBOYS -TALL & SKINNY or FAT and WIDE TIRES

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Aug 23, 2023.

  1. i suppose it depends on what era your aiming for, the tall & skinny look great on early style builds where the fat and wide on the rear have a 60's vibe, what say you?

    Examples -

    Tall & skinny

    Fat & wide.

Of course, I can appreciate one that’s a little more stout in the rear now and then.

Tall and skinny is the only thing that looks “right” to me.

    Welcome back HRP.

My deuce highboy roadster has 500/16 front and 700/18 on the rear, tall and short skinny Excelsior's. My deuce highboy sedan has 145/15 Michelin fronts and 285/70/15 BFG's on the rear. A little bit of both.

  17. This photo always gets a lot of likes, so I haven't seen the need to change to skinnies.

  18. I'm a tall and skinny fan on hiboys, but also don't really have a valid perspective since I have never owned one...

Barrys' first roadster really set the hook for me when planning my build.

You answered your own question in the question. Wheel and tire choice have to be a working part of the whole build theme or they are just flat wrong.
Blues4U has one of the best eyes for what looks right for the theme of a particular hot rod as anyone around. Every car he posted is spot on and stays right on theme. Not one mixed and match and not quite right one in the bunch. The best thing is when he first posted those photos in show coverage you just saw the total car and didn't see one part on the car stand out over the rest of the car except maybe for the Ardun a little bit but an Ardun is an Ardun and so be it. Even that car is 100% on theme.

I’m indecisive. I think Pat Ganahl had the right (albeit expensive) idea. One set of steels with skinny’s and caps. One set of mags and wides. Change the entire vibe of the car in 15 minutes.

  28. What BOATMARK said^^^ I like both. But a pair of old dirt track tires on ET-III's or Halibrands suits me. Yeah it's 60's for sure. 137.jpg 336.jpg 116.jpg

Are some of these wider than what was offered in 1965?

I'm all for tall and skinnies and not quite so tall and skinnies.
    Appropriate to the time frame.
