Well....... it moved? Not much to report, I made a makeshift dolly for it, proceeded to fold the doors in half, rolled it off to the side and stack parts against it. I mean, and I sat in it. cause, duh. I used my VW motor as a prop to hold the hood up, so I could look at it, and nearly caused a couple heart attacks, cause my friends think I'm nuts enough to put a VW in it apparently. looks pretty slick for a stack of parts. Eventually it had to get disassembled so I could finish some work around it. My plan is to have it mocked up (including real motor and frame) by my open house on September 9th. Wish me luck!
I know its a rules violation and all, but those heads hanging out in the wind would be pretty damn cool! Would Corvair power bring it hamb approval?
extremely cool! I was planning to run a 911-T motor/ transaxle in this [narrowed/chopped 36 ford pu cab] but the Porche sold for more $$ than I thought it would....
That is a beautiful “show” six. Hours spend building that exhaust. The intake has to loop around into a manifold to feed into 3 intake ports. Seems over complicated for show and not a practical street motor but she sure be purty
haha well guys, its sure lively here. I finally drug the frame inside Friday to play with it. I stuck in a "k member" from a 35 chevy I had laying around, and with some slicing it might work. I'm gonna take out both the spring crossmembers that are in it now, and probably go back to some form of bulldog style perch off the front tube. I haven't decided on the rear yet, but the quarter ellipticals I used on the T work pretty good. I also played with hooking up my axle and pushed around some other parts I have in stock. I also got tired of tripping over the hood, and decided it should be on the car. So a couple screws later and viola! (note the vw motor moved farther away) this allowed me the see the thing as one piece for the first time since I got it. and here's a snippet from my instagram story... There's a lot I want to do, mostly just to clean up, and make the car feel natural. It's also just a shell. It nearly fell apart when I put it on the roll cart it's sitting on now. so there will need to be a lot of bracing and squaring. I do have a 36 windshield surround and cowl top, and that will probably get pressed into service to tie everything together. but this morning I went a different direction, picking up a new project car, and a bunch of parts for the speed coupe. A set of 7:00-16 bias plies, and a 10 bolt chevy rearend to mock up (and possibly use?). I'll leave you with a little bit of a cliffhanger, and just say that I picked up the motor today.. or at least some of it... If you know what you're looking at, you can probably tell from this photo.. but if not, you'll just have to wait..
This thing sure has a sweet profile. Those hood sides have plenty of room to show off a Flat 4…. If you change your mind on zoomies Always impressed with how fast you work even in mock-up. Keep it up
So the first thing you should know about me, is that I am cheap. At least, cheap on some things. like manual labor. could I have taken the tires down to the local tire place, spent $10 and been done? yes. did I? no. such is my inner monologue when I spend an hour trying to get one tire on, then 5 minutes on the second one. So as a cooldown job, I stuck together the front end, that is, after I spent 45 minutes looking for my hone to clean the spindle bores. "reorganization will be fun" they said. I had the cute idea that I would install that piece of conduit to hold the hairpins up... that worked until I put the body on, then it turned into a taco. This is where I left off Friday night. I woke up Saturday and after breakfast , I moved on. the next step was... move everything. check. then I needed to install wheels... this is when my buddy informed me that he did not, in fact, have a set of hubs for the 5x4.75 wheels I had put the tires on. Soo....... I installed them with one stud and lugnut to my 5x5.5 hubs. he also helped get the rearend bolted to the wheels and in place. He installed a Porsche carb that looked pretty good, if it wasn't for other plans and my desire to sell it.. so back to the display cabinet it went.. There's a significant gap in photos here, but you can imagine: Disassembly, Grunting, Language not suited for small ears, More grunting, Bending, Shifting, Ect, ect. you know how it goes. not bad. still needs the back brought down slightly, and the grille trimmed. Looks less radical from the side.. And "holy rake batman" from the back. This shot shows a somewhat awkward angle, and shows the need the lower the rear, and raise the quarters.. or at least reshape them, and play with the roof. I did some more work to the nose in paper, cut the grille, and started moving stuff around. I wound up shifting the body back probably 2-3 inches, which helped with a couple awkward areas. I continued to play with stuff, pushing it back and forth and tweaking little stuff while I cleaned around the shop, and doing such things as: Organizing the bolt drawer. Ok, You bored yet? Well, If you made it this far. . . A couple of you were right. The engine I'm planning on using is this 241 hemi! I hope to find a set of heads to mockup, and have the engine sitting in the car for my open house. Till then, it looks really cool in mockup form.
Glad to see this back, my first was a '36 Three window. I chopped the top 5-1/4" in front, 6" in back. I was 13. Mom: "Why'd you cat it down so low?" Me: "So folks would know it's 'chopped'!"
"Hemi has landed" Mike stopped by on Friday after picking up my mockup heads from a buddy in Topeka. Thankfully he decided to stick around and help me install the block/crank into the coupe. ... That was a deal. I would have taken pictures, but we were too deep into it. Hemi's are heavy and awkward, and it doesn't help that the legs of the engine hoist don't fit under anything. so we raised the wheels up on 2x4s and jacked the frame up so we could get the block in. A couple 2x4s under the pan and viola! hemi IN coupe. next was the heads, I think we have studs for this motor, but I don't have them at my shop. So I took a couple long SBC head bolts and cut the heads off, then threaded them into the block and hung the heads. A few observations. 1. Damn that looks cool. 2. ALL hemi parts are stupid heavy 3. holy cow its huge for 241 cubic inches 4. did I mention everything is heavy? The motor still needs to come up another couple inches to get ground clearance. Looks pretty cool and fills the space up... A little too well. I grabbed a SBC bellhousing I had to see how much room there was inside. Not much. Obviously crunched up, but have you seen my other car? still more room than the T. looks like I'll be headed here.. Then I just played around with my fisheye lens till I had to do something else. did I mention I'm having an open house? I should clean or something.
Only Joey could build a 36 ford and still end up with a seating position that’s laying on your lower back with your knees in your arm pits lol
I think u should raise body a bit to show holy ( hole ) frame & put rear wheels more in center of wheel indent. U already said u moved body back couple inches
You may have wondered, especially when you saw my seating position in the coupe, why I, a taller person, would shove the motor back so far? well, Reasons. And I picked up those reasons from my buddy Erik while I was in Omaha last weekend. A lot of fabrication to come, but this will be a fun experiment to push myself on. BOOST BABY, BOOST! Sorry for the terrible pictures, but I'm supposed to be cleaning my shop for my open house, not building hot rods.. But if YOU had a blower, you couldn't leave it on the floor could you? Yes sir! I hope he starts posting again! Mine is going to be different for a few reasons, but the main thing I want to do different is run a Gilmer drive belt, to help with longevity of parts, and help with the harmonics of things. It will also allow me to swap pulleys at will to get the amount of boost I desire. Always. always doing it. lol
Can you get a gilmer belt short enough for what you are thinking? I've never seen really short ones, but that looks to be where you are headed?
