Art & Inspiration Let's see some rattle can excellence

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57chevymadman, Aug 20, 2023.

  1. Rattle can gloss paint on the steering wheel, column, trans tunnel, shifter knob and garnish moldings. All the suspension components and engine accessory pieces are also rattle can paint. I usually use Rustoleum and color sand and buff it. Good enough to be featured in three magazines ...

And I recently masked off the surround and painted the bars on my grille insert with more rattle can Rustoleum.

FYI Graffitti "artists" have always known about different caps or tips for better spray patterns. Back in the day, youd snag the cap you wanted off whatever aresol can that had what you wanted. Slang term was "fatcaps". Anyways long story long, nowadays you can order said fat caps, fine line caps ect.. Online through Graffitti art supply stores. Man times have changed.. All you Krylon Cowboys keep up the good work ! @williebill

With Rust-O-Leum I like to warm the can before spraying, lay on a nice wet coat and let 'er bake in the sun. Flows out real nice & lasts. IMG_2004.JPG

    Don’t turn me loose with a rattle can if you don’t want me to use it! 5791175D-EE99-4EAA-A8A9-29386EAAA51B.jpeg 722841D0-1764-4C0A-B77A-05D9D07D0D3F.jpeg 186C13D9-268E-4A3D-8A00-8C13D4BC119D.jpeg FA4060AB-44D1-48B5-86E6-2674CDB491C5.jpeg E6786309-0684-4775-8F4C-8E8F7E3F1212.jpeg 27B06F79-9B44-445C-8F44-D6E3E3322DFD.jpeg C86DC1A2-D77B-46DB-A82A-886580AD07D4.jpeg D215D655-C7CE-4B92-A789-FBB78942BE10.jpeg 4DF3EAE5-EEF3-4B01-8451-B7F482AFD716.jpeg C64999EC-B9B2-4BAE-B658-62003EFF8E3C.jpeg 198803A5-A7F6-4130-BCBE-FF942F2CD4EE.jpeg 31609D56-6DF8-490A-A222-CD48CED41186.jpeg 74741524-BBAF-47C3-9118-8950E4E15775.jpeg 2F774AB6-CE16-404E-A10A-5A6C7A4AF39E.jpeg

Ironically, the first car I painted was my Kidillac, like the one shown, @ the tender age of four. (I'm sure it didn't come out that good)

You Rattle Can Old Timers just arent "keeping up with modern paint materials and technology", your prehistoric alkyd enamel spray paint will fall off :D

I've used spray cans for plenty of stuff over the years. It's real paint, and just like real paint the results depend on the work you put into it. Interior painting, small parts, wheels - all good.
You guys who paint cars with it, though, have my utmost respect. That's a skill in itself!
I limit myself to smaller projects like my '64 Chevy II dash and steering column.
Rattle can black lacquer, with just a little rubbing and polishing to follow up...

We have a jobber here locally that sells body supplies and I like Dupont, so I'm getting an off topic car of mine ready. So to color test it, I had him mix me a can of Fathom Blue SS paint in a rattle can. It was 40 bucks, but the delivery was great. The nozzle was of good quality and I wouldn' t be scared to paint a larger area with it. It would get pricey though.

I would be interested to hear more about the process in each photo.
That is whether you used clear coat over top and sanded between coats etc….
    Also specific brands and compatibility.
I find that very few brands are compatible with each other.
Only two that I have had success with recently were dulux and Wattyl.
Never tried rustoleum as it was never available until recently.
I was using dulux, then that store closed down, so now using Wattyl kill rust enamel.
At least the gloss black is gloss and also black, - not dark brown when in the sunlight, like some other brands.

I went to the local auto body supply and had them mix up some 2K green to match the roof on my 59, topped it off with 2K satin clear. No gloss on the dashboard or I’d get blinded on sunny days lol. I’m really happy with the results though I might touch up a few spots.

    That dashboard looks sah-weeet!
On my '39, I used Rustoleum gloss black on the lower part of the dash and satin on the top area. Best of both worlds.
