For those who don’t know, the beautiful Tom Hocker ‘40 was once this car from American Graffiti

Actually when I was looking for a '40 Coupe 3 years ago, I wasn't too concerned about what engine was in it. Flathead (original or later) would have been fine, SBC only if it was 283 or 327, Cadillac would have been nice or of course 289 or 302 (289 preferred). I was told it was 302, but when changing v/covers, I found the heads to be 289. Won't know for sure until I pull the intake.
My Wife bought the '40 for me. She would have liked something with a/c and all the other "good" stuff. But, I didn't want a Street Rod. It didn't have to be all original but not hacked up. I had to be able to drive it as is, not a project. One of the first things that would stop me is MII steering, an absolute NO. I wanted that to be original. Now, I am a Hot Rodder more than anything else. But I like somethings to be or at least look original. For instance, I installed a Classic Instruments cluster, looks original but with a Tachometer. The steering column had been changed but steering box is original with shafts being cut and welded. I will be installing later box with plain looking column. Right now it is driveable, so I am leaving it for now.
The car already had the 289/302, C4 and 8 inch rear on parallel leafs. I have another 8 inch with 3.55 posi that will eventually be installed.
The car is not perfect, but is fun to drive and I get plenty of nice comments when driving it.

Of course if it had a Chevy engine, I probably wouldn't have to worry about any speeding tickets. Then again, I don't worry about them with the Ford engine. . .I just out run them. Lol.

Disclaimer: If you are running a Chevy engine, MII steering or any of the other "good" stuff, I do not hold that against you. It's your car. Just not for me. Hey, my wife has a '57 Nomad. Ron

  27. I’m with ya on all of that stuff. I’m a hot rodder not a street rodder. I drive mine everywhere it doesn’t see a trailer and could less about a dust gathering trophy. I could care less what mill is in my car or anybody else’s for what it’s worth. It’s their car, their money and what makes them happy. I have a 350 out of a 71 Chevelle with tri-power straight axle I did have buggies in the back as well but I just changed them out to posies dual leafs. Always hear people say you ruined it putting that Chevy engine in it. I’m like well it was in it when I got it. That Flathead that was in it blew up and they put that engine in it almost 20 years ago. I have a Flathead in my shoebox and it’s staying that way. People always have to say snide remarks but ask them what they have and it’s “nothing right now” meaning if they ever do get one they are going to be hungry and get whatever they can afford and if it has a Chevy engine then so be it lol
That’s a nice ride you have I like it a lot.
