I especially like all your subtle homegrown custom touches- the rearend housing, batwings, headers, steering, yada, yada, yada.

Regarding color- the blue primer in your August 7th post looks good, but the Corvette colors you shared a few months ago look terrific. I think some of the most convincing traditional hot rods in recent memory (like Cory T's '34) were painted the OEM colors of the period they emulated.

 

Thanks Gary! The car will eventually be painted and the Arctic blue is what I’m leaning towards, but for now it will be in primer and I figured it might as well be blue too. Don’t have near the time it would take to bodywork and paint it in 5 weeks.

 

I’m hoping for a busy weekend…but this week I got a little bit done. The only grill shell and insert that is going to make me happy is original stuff, but I can’t justify that on this build. I was pretty close with the Vintique insert and Brookville shell but the bottom still fit horrible. So I cut off the bottom of the old crappy grill shell and swapped it in. With a bit more hammer and dolly work, it should shape up ok.


I stuck the junk block back in the frame with my transmission. Test fit the distributor and it’s good. While it was in there I made my shifter handle. Extended the stub of an old round Hurst handle I picked up and welded it to the stub out of my shifter. Alex digs it.

 

Finished welding in the floors, got the front cowl feet reinforced and capped on the bottom. Added a tab to the inside behind the exhaust notch to give me another frame mounting point. Pulled the body apart for the last time. Finished the transition from the original subrails to the new back half. Finished any welding left on the bracing. Finally pulled it back off the frame and wire wheeled the old subrails and cowl structure and got some Por15 on it. Then started on the remaining frame welding…when the weather moved in and cut power and ended my weekend. But I’ll finish the frame tonight. Then one morning this week since it has cooled off a little, I’ll get the a coat of paint on the subrails and floors , then I can reassemble everything for the last time and make the quarters permanent.

Up and at em…

Frame almost done. Floors prepped. Got some enamel on all the areas that will be stuck together with the quarters on. I will paint the whole underside after it’s assembled. Was up early today getting the quarters ready. I mixed my primer and the dye and found I need a lot more dye, should be here tomorrow. I think we might see a primered frame Thursday…

I don’t think I’ve ever thrashed this hard, but it’s been a long time since the last one. Joey and his dedication on that T are a lot of motivation!

The frame is done. Short story about the rear framerails. They are original ‘32 and were scabbed onto the back of the original frame that was under my ‘32 roadster, but they were too short so I had to replace them. Really glad I held onto them and got to use them now. I blended them in with some scrap tubing…they look good with the body on even though the transition to the rails isn’t ideal. The way Rjays caps the back of these frames is pretty weird and I wasn’t about to start redoing everything. There are a couple bolts in the body…will wrap it up tomorrow night.

I should note the body isn’t bolted down or centered anywhere so don’t pay attention to that wheel well/frame c-notch mismatch.

 

Wednesday night I fully bolted everything on the body together for the last time, welded the
B-pillar braces on, added a few more welds here and there, and wrapped up the rear quarter panel braces. Last night (with a lot of help from my wife) I pulled the body off, hammered over the flange at the bottom of the fender wells and put a few welds on that. Then sanded the frame and prepped the garage for spraying. Got up early this morning and wiped everything down a couple times and shot the primer! I really wasn’t sure what to expect with the color but it turned out kinda Niekamp blue, I like it. It’s darker in person. I think I’m going to let everything sit today and start chassis assembly Saturday. I still have to paint the rear suspension pieces but they’re just getting rattle canned.

Yeah- mine helps bleed brakes, is pretty handy with an engine hoist, and discourages me from doing anything really stupid.

 

she usually discourages the stupid stuff, but it hasn’t stopped me yet…

 

Mine actually encourages the stupid stuff with phrases such as "let's go ski this Double Black Diamond honey!"

Other than primer, I’d never shot two-part paint before. Of course there will be a lot more care required for the body, but for this kinda stuff it’s so much easier than I thought. I was just going to rattle can the chassis parts but it would never have looked as nice as I wanted. After a late start yesterday I ran down to Summit and got some supplies, stopped for a tasty burger on the way home then got to work. I’m glad I took the time to do it this way. Ended up re-shooting the rear end, spindles, and rear spring hangers this morning with both springs. I did spray the rear drums, ladder bars and engine mount with a can of white 2K I had, but it didn’t cover very well so I ended up hitting them with Rustoleum. I think I’m going to repaint the motor mount when I shoot the firewall though. Even in primer, I think this is going to be the nicest car I’ve ever built for myself…or at least the best quality.

 

I recently used some of Summit's single stage black for the wheels on Ashley's rpu. I was surprised how nice it sprayed, but also how nice of a black it is.

I really like Summit's DTM sandable epoxy primer. Goes on thick, sands really well, doesn't chip when you bolt stuff together. Previously I had been using PPG Concept single stage, which of June 5th is discontinued. I might just try their paint this time too.

I took it easy most of yesterday after working in the morning and had some other obligations last night. But then this morning…made a hardware list, then had to go grab a set of wheels for another project, but stopped at Ace on the way home…glad they were open! Picked up a bunch of stainless and chrome hardware, came home and got to work. Here are the results.

Took a breather tonight…wheel swap on the ‘57. Needs much bigger tires out back and the car will be raised all around. Back to roadster stuff tomorrow.

Prepped it last night and shot the inside of the body, the cowl, cowl top and dash this morning.

 

What's the story on the square head bolts used on the rear spreader bar? It's a pretty cool look.
