In retrospect I guess it was a local thing. That style of roof from 59 to 61 shared across the G.M. line was called the Bubble Top because of all the glass and thin supports, hence the Bubble Top. Even Ford picked up on it with a similar style with the I believe was called the Starliner roofline.
About their journey was made a movie some years ago and there are documentaries about that. But this is really cool, some films from back then:
In the second photo from the top, on the same bracket that's holding the bell is that a water sprinkler head to cool (pre air conditioning) the driver on hot summer days.?
I could agree in part but in 61 all your GM’s used the top that went up further than any of the 59-60’s but to me they were “only” tops…only one available….The 62 Bel Air was the true one to me…
Sounds right, but we always referred to them as Bubble Tops. if you google 1962 chevy Impala 2dht its called a bubble top coupe. Thanks for the reply.
When you look back on all the "bubbletop' crap circulating today, you'll find the term was coined by the 409 guys to describe the '62 Bel Air hardtop ... slowly, every car with a round roof became one ...
