I have a 1948 chevy fleetmaster. (Working on engine, body is at a different location) Does anyone knows the gap size between the top of the carb and the hood? Working on a different style carb cover and am hoping it clears.... Thanks in advance
You haven't given much information. Is it the stock engine? Stock carb/manifold? The hood is generally pretty tall on those cars and provides lots of engine clearance.
I'd take a level and lay it on the hood, I'd suspect that "level" would be slightly above the hood, measure how much and then raise the hood (If I remember right the springs aren't great..use a prop rod to hold it a little higher, then use your level from about where the hood was, you know how much drop there is...you should be able to visualize how much room you have. I'd agree that you could probably mount a blower and still clear, good luck EDIT....I didn't read close enough..no engine My idea is of NO value.
For some people, reading is a problem. He said his body and engine were not together. How could he use a “gob” of clay?
When you get the engine installed put a 2' long piece of all thread in the carburetor where the air cleaner stud goes. Close the hood or attempt to and where the rod dents the hood drill a hole then fully close the hood. Mark the all thread where it comes through the hood and cut it off. Measure the length and VIOLA. You will know how much clearance you have and a new hole in your hood to either weld up or let the heat out of.
Unless you're building a Chevy version of the OG Ramchargers "High and Mighty" you probably have nothing to worry about. You did say stock stuff so...
From looking at the pictures, it appears that any normal engine in these cars is going to sit about as high as the fenders or slightly lower. So I'd guess that you have the full height of the hood above the motor as a minimum.
You might refer to stovebolt.com to ask your question if you want an accurate measurement on a stocker.
here is what i was doing gents. just something a little different for some special occasions aka shows. by the looks of it, i am about 1/2 inch taller than the regular carb cap cover. once i get the body down here in the spring i will know 100%, but for now it looks good in the garage lol
Just Thoughts , If body frame @ different location , can some one take a measurement from Frame , center of motor mount bolt up to bottom inside of Hood , Or some one with stock 48 Fleet master Take a Measurement from a given location to bottom inside of hood, ( I think of this like reading a Blue Print) A Stocker , Measurement from top of intake ? Or something as A reference point ??? If some one has a Stocker A ball of Tinfoil will give a Measurement Think a little out side of box ,
