I am still looking for an original San Francisco Ramblers club plaque. I am now 82 year old, and in my teen years I lived in San Francisco and some Ramblers club members took me under their wings, took me to car shows, and to the Half Moon Bay drag strip. The club plaque, and the club members mean a lot to me. The plaques were made of bronze, not aluminum.
Years ago a few of us were going to form a car club called THE CHEAPSKATES, but no one wanted to spend the money on making plaques.
Someone found this plaque for sale on-line and bought it, then contacted me to see if I knew anything about this club. I did several Google searches but came up empty. Has anyone on the HAMB heard of this club or know what a Tonker is?
I think it's a polite way of saying "Dickhead" in England. Here, a 'Tonk" is something of value. Sorry, that's all I got.
Well that's something. With the champagne glass and top hat I thought it might have something to do with a Honky Tonk, where Tonkers hang out.
In British English, "tonkers" is a slang term that means something is very big or impressive. For example, "the landscape says 'I've got a great big tonker'". It can also be a childish euphemism for the word "penis". The term may have originated in northern England.
Here is a another quality Dennis O'Brien reproduction plaque of the club my dad co-founded in 1953. Reproduction was made using a straight on photo of the back of his club jacket to create the art.
