This is for our Australian friends, anyone know anything about a company called Hemi performance? I seem to have built myself into a corner regarding a starter and they appear to make the one I need!
Are you wanting a starter motor for an Aussie 6 cylinder Hemi? [245 or 265] If not what is so special about the starter you want???
It’s a long story, I put a flywheel off a slant six in my 65 barracuda not realizing they are 148 tooth flywheel on the 60-62 slants which is apparently what I had, requiring a 9 tooth starter pinion which is smaller than the modern mopar starters. Because I have a new bell housing there apparently isn’t a starter that fit’s except in Australia….as far as I can tell so far. So it’s either pull the engine and swap flywheels. or if Hemi Performance starter fits then that would be easier…
Contact Tim Wood at Roadrunner Starters in NZ He is a Chrysler nut! And makes good products https://www.roadrunner-starters.com/ Email: tim@roadrunner-starters.com I can personally endorse his honesty [I've known Tim since high school] All the pricing on his website includes NZ sales tax [so you won't pay that for export] and the NZD is only 60c USD Cheers Kerry [use my name if you need to]
Also try IMI starters in California. They use OE Denso starters not Chinese knockoffs of Denso starters. Talk to Chris. https://www.hitorque.com/ I sold their units when I had the auto electric rebuilding side of the business still running and they put out a great product.
Just my thoughts, but if buying overseas, out of state, is the only option, buy two and keep one in the trunk. I rarely have had vehicle issues at my place
The starter on my 62 Aussie Valiant is the same as the starter I am using on my 63 Dodge Poly 318 in my 32 Coupe so can you track down a 318 starter in Canada. I assume that our Dodges came from Canada , not sure if our Valiants did. I did actually buy a hi-torque starter from one of our local Mopar suppliers -TVR? brand which I think are based in Canada, could you check them out? I do know that our 61 and 62 Valiant starters do not work with later models and I guess it is as you state.
This is the problem I have run into, neither factory starter works with my combination of parts. It appears that Hemi Performance and the company Kerry recommended both make a starter that bolts to the new style bell housing but works with a 148 tooth flywheel
Pull the engine??? Can't you just drop the gearbox to change the flywheel? Surely that would be a better option than using a starter that is not readily available in the US. Murphy's Law says you will probably have constant starter issues if it is hard to get a replacement..........
I could yes, looking at options. If I can find the 9 tooth 25mm starter pinions then I can simply make my existing nippondenso starters work. On early a bodies it’s almost faster to pull the engine then the transmission….
Just remembered last night that I have a biscuit tin of left-over starter bits from a 2 makes one situation from many years ago and may have the starter pinion which you need. Will check this morning @57 Fargo and get back to you today.
We have the same problem buying USA parts and getting them shipped to NZ [and find the "parts jockeys" send the wrong parts ] A Nippon-Denso starter will be OK as long as he doesn't chew the pinion. All the other parts [contacts, solenoids etc] are available OEM on Toyota vehicles eg: HiAce Vans. @twenty8 These Aftermarket "Denso" starters are more reliable than the vehicle they're fitted to. I once had to load my race car onto a trailer using the starter motor [one of Tim's], It handled the job with relative ease , including cranking over the 482" engine with 12.5:1 compression The only issue @57 Fargo faces is getting one that fits [shipping back and forth with "trial and error" would be counterproductive]
Kind of my point. A hard part, no worries. Electrical, etc, then you have to look ahead. I mean no one needs an intake manifold on a Saturday afternoon, but might need a new (fill in here) that day.
Alright so it turns out I’m a dumbass…big shock I know… I spent the morning building a hybrid starter I took the smaller 9 tooth pinion out of the direct drive starter and after a little cutting and machining I welded in place of the bigger ten tooth pinion, thinking I was brilliant I put it in the car and confidently hit the key! And!!! Grinding….all sorts of terrible noises…hmmmm…. Feeling moderately less brilliant I crawled under the car and pried the bendix out and promptly noticed it only come out far enough to catch the very edge of the ring gear…after some measurements it has become clear that not only is a different gear tooth count but the flywheel is a different “offset” so to speak. At least I hadn’t ordered a starter from halfway across the world yet, I did order a flywheel though!!! At least I’ll be able to use a plain old starter. Thank you to everyone that helped, I did learn a bunch from all of this, mostly that I’m a dumbass!
Back inside after investigating my stock of Mopar parts and I find that you've solved the problem. I won't comment on your dumbass admission as I'm sure all of us have been there at some time. If the problem is fixed then that's great. BTW my Hi-Torque starter is a CVR brand.
@gimpyshotrods, yup I have a few of those as well as a pile of the old gear reduction starters, the problem I ran into was an oddball 148 tooth flywheel. Too stupid to look really close before scrambling for a solution to an unsolvable problem of my own doing…
