I have a rebuilt stock yblock in a 57 country sedan wagon. I'll be putting in a ford 4 barrel intake (ECZ-9425-B) along with a 1403 Edelbrock carb with electric choke. I purchased a CRT Pro Series electronic distributor but quickly found out that the body of the dizzy is too wide and is up against the firewall preventing me from putting the cap on. I've decided to go with a PerTronix setup but I'm wondering if I can use the 56 loadomatic dizzy or is that not compatible with the 1403 Edelbrock because the dizzy is vacuum only? Or should I rebuild my 57 dizzy with the PerTronix so I have both vacuum and mechanical?
There were no 57 loadmatic’s for a standard V8. The “E” code dual quad 312 still used Holley 4000’s and I don’t know about the ignition it used.
Perfect for 9 years! Pertronix II. Ballast used, Their coil,. Haven’t changed a spark plug as they look great. Your experience may differ!
It would be nice if some one would respond to the question of a Loadmatic with a later Edelbrock carb. I know there is a modification to a Holley 4000 to run a later ignition. I too am guilty of responding off topic in the a Pertronix reference.
No way will a Loadomatic distributor work properly with an Edelbrock carb. The carb will supply 4 times as much vacuum as the distributor is calibrated for at part throttle and will be at full advance as soon as the throttle is touched, then will lose all advance when the throttle is wide open.
Load-O-Matic distributors require a venturi vacuum signal to get proper advance. The Edelbrock carb has no provision for a venturi vacuum signal. Therefore, it just won't work. You need the 57 or newer distributor that has centrifugal advance.
Nope, overall. That garbage made it into the late 1960's! It may have been the last year on that engine. The proper way to handle a Load-O-Matic is to toss it in the dumpster, after sawing it in half.
A former girlfriend's '67 200 powered Mustang had one; I guess that Ford just didn't want to admit what a stupid idea it was.
