I recently took part in a "first" event. My car being a 29 Buick, something I consider big for the era. Here she is parked next to a 27 T coupe!

Not entirely new but this was their first time doing it officially. The goal is a complete step back into time whether it's cars, camp, food, music everything. In this case it was up to 1935. What fun, think "glamping" on steroids.
The green tent is actually an original teens camp trailer that was pulled by a 1931 Model A sedan.

Above is a 7 passenger 1921 Studebaker touring and below my 1929 Buick and camp. We were the 2 "big" cars with about 130 inch wheelbase!
    Screenshot_20230918-123207.png
We had a couple days where we toured out of camp at least a third was dirt/gravel.
    Screenshot_20230919-081449.png
We did have a creek that we forged relatively deep.

Time frame is basically roaring 20's, prohibition, ect bringing about basically the dawn of camping. In the future most likely there will be hunting/fishing ect. SO much better than a car show. Finishing up driving, feeling good sitting around a fire chatting. Wild rabbit and duck was cooked and turned out excellent.

    Screenshot_20230918-123701.png
We did have a bartender and open period speakeasy. No need to worry about driving because the tent is right there.

Yes, that is in an 1800's violin case
Period silent movies, kids playing, and even a camp dog!

If there were more of these and I didn't have a car I would be looking for one I could use. Perhaps a bit early time period for most but could you imagine something set a little more modern going to the races and doing vintage racing?
Total drive there the event and back was about 800 miles on the car. It was quite the shakedown cruise for a new to me original that had been stored since????

The “ Time Frame “ events always looks like fun. I watched a period piece like you are describing from Goodwood Festival of Speed. They did WWII time frame and most people came dressed as soldiers as well as civilians from WWII. It was truly spectacular. Unfortunately, I don’t think hot rods could fit into a small time frame

I think a banger set up pre v8 would be early 30's and accepted. Of course it may not hold up to the roads. Think pre war built on a T base.

  6. I used to do the Gatsby picnic in Oakland when I lived there. Everybody dressed up in 20-40's style. I would shuttle people from the front gate to the site. For many that was the first time someone had ridden in an antique car and they loved it! I even let a lady ride on the running board of my Model A all the way in. I would love to do something like that up in Washington/Canada.

IMG_4118.jpeg I’d be in the Dust Bowl division. I think a ragtop phaeton with a caged goat on a running board, lots of camping / household goods, spare parts and tires, and a few jugs of moonshine.

  8. If you were in Australia you might have fit in perfectly with the Feral Sports Car Club.

Unfortunately, their official website disappeared several years ago. Perhaps a victim of social media. Does anyone know if the Ferals still maintain a presence down-under?

Linus is leading our T bums group on a trip the end of this month at the Bohemia Mining District near Cottage Grove Oregon. Here's pics from our last camping trip.

  20. OK, now I gotta get in with a group for this! Dwollam, do you do this often and is there a website I can go?

  21. In your first post you mentioned "Glamping". Which, to me, makes it sound a bit "snooty" and "uppity". Camping designed only for the "right" people in the "right" places. Something exclusive, only enjoyed by the well-to-do crowd.

But what you're describing here seems to have a more universal appeal. Something to be enjoyed more by the "make-do" crowd. Simple folks that may have come up on the other side of the tracks. But it still needs a catchy, honest, descriptive name of its own.

    Might I suggest "Slum-ping"? o_O

@1930artdeco Mike, we do it a lot, like every month. Many times we haul behind motorhomes and camp in the boonies and travel out from camp in T's and A's and DB's and Studes or whatever oldies. Other times we drive them and tent camp. No web site or club dues or anything but we are pretty organized with no obligations. We meet 1st Saturday of the months for breakfast and several meet weekly at the bakery for bull sessions. PM me and give me your contact info and email address and I can put you on our email list.
