In front of our second Westside of Long Beach home. We sold the other older, smaller Craftsman house and bought this newer, at the time, house in the fall of 1952. Our family and especially our mom, stayed in the house until she left all of us in 1998. Prior to passing away, she had agreed to move into our neighborhood and bought a newly built, condominium for her next level house.

After high school (A Flathead powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery) and college, my wife and I bought a 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery project for our lifestyle. It looked good when we bought it, but were surprised that it became a project to correct plenty of ride, handling, braking and overall safety items. We knew it had good bones, but it took a lot of late night work and professional help to get it to the most reliable hot rod in our post college days. So, after many months, we had a nice hot rod for all of our So Cal activities.

Surfing, camping, photo shoots, running errands, visiting friends and of course visiting our parents. It was specifically in that order. But, when my mom was alone in our old Westside of Long Beach house, we visited often. The drive up the coast or on the freeway was always trouble free and a fun time due to having our only car with A/C.

When we got to our mom’s house, either she had a ton of food already prepared or we all went out to her favorite restaurants. But, we had to take her old Chevy sedan. Luckily, it too had A/C and we all arrived in comfort. The sedan delivery was nicer, but only had two bucket seats. No room/seat for backseat drivers!

So, here is a newly found photo from an old “extras” color slide box that had been sitting in our photo storage area and never used until its discovery. I know why it was stored away, the color transparency film was a different brand than Kodak Ektachrome we normally used. The developing technique was similar, but the outcome was slightly off. So, those got stored away. But these days, any old photo from our history gives one an insight into what was happening during that time period.

Despite, our Willys Coupe history always gave my mom the “willies” pun intended… she always told us it was a very dark moment in her life, as well as in my brother’s history. We were all affected, and as a mom, and as we were parents later on, we could see the situation clearly. But, my mom always thought the 40 Sedan Delivery(s) looked like the 40 Willys Coupe. Parents, what do they know ! Ha!

Note:

My wife liked the sedan delivery and the way we worked to make it safe and fun to drive. When I explained the high school Flathead sedan delivery mode back in 1960, she agreed to allow me to make the 327 powered sedan delivery look similar to my old flathead version. Simple, but a very reliable and nice hot rod for the times. She like it so much that it was just not me as the primary driver, but we had to flip a coin to see who got to drive the 327 powered sedan delivery somewhere.

My mom was always in disbelief to see my wife driving the sedan delivery into her driveway when we visited. A 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery in front of a 30 plus year house in the old Westside of Long Beach neighborhood back then, was a sight to see... YRMV
