  1. That’s cool on the clock! Another little victory! Keep it up.

  2. Clock has been keeping time, ticking right along. the original clock is the (inferior) Borg Warner clock, this clock is a La Salle clock, La Salles design is WAAAY more robust than the borg warner.
strange to think that with this car " most of the time, all you will ever hear is the ticking of the clock..." was once a possibility

  3. I have 2 clocks that came with my car loose in the trunk. I should play with them, they seem to be in good shape. Right now I have a clock-delete plate where it goes in the dash.

  4. If you know someone who sews you know someone with sewing machine oil, i used that on the brass to brass points on the clock, which allows it to start working. so long as the solenoid/electromagnet isnt broken it should work. i had to use my finger and gently rotate it around an hours worth with the escape wheel moving, once it starts it will typically keep going once the spring engages.

do keep in mind which design you have, the la salle one is way better built than the borg warner. (brass body vs fiber body, straight main spring vs coil main spring, etc) and the escape wheel is also larger.

  5. lots of finishing touches today, heater core holds to 30 psi after finding the little pinhole next to the tube. i also did what i said i would do a year ago and painted the radiator to "deuglify" it. 20230924_122952.jpg 20230924_122940.jpg 20230924_122957.jpg 20230924_153105.jpg 20230924_153122.jpg

didnt mean to do this today, but my hood hinge started to crumple on one side so now i swapped the hoods.

at least i bought this one way ahead of schedule. definitely going to paint it. 20230924_193111.jpg
also @Jeff Norwell id like to learn how to properly align this hood, as its pretty close, but one side is a just a little higher than the other, i also need to install the hood bumpers and emblem off the other hood.

(also my dad broke the mirror, again, but i probably didnt get the metal clean enough so i just need to sand, file, and clean it then try again.)

Your hood is looking pretty good.... most adjustment is playing with the hood hinges that bolt into your rad core support. Also there is play in the end of the hinges where the hood bolts to the hinges(4 points.)
It's all a matter of playing with these ... ever so slightly.
Also,If you haven't done so already,... find yourself a 1959 Hood latch..... a much better design and only requires a 2 finger shut compared to a 57-58 Palm slam.
They are pretty cheap.. 20 bucks or so....and is a direct bolt on.I run them on both my cars.... I really like them.

    Your 57 is looking Great!

Yes. your hood could be bent..... from your first pic(3/4 shot front the drivers side)... the hood looks to be sitting level and flush against the bull nose........ hard to tell.....
Just play with the hinge points and see if it will pancake down a bit more.

Adjustment for either hinge(right or left) is where they mount to the rad core..... You can adjust the base up or down.
keep the drivers side tight to begin with, the pass. side loosen off,.... see if it will move down.... with pressure.... Re-tighten and see what happens......
But if your hood is kinked..... better to look for a new hood. You will never get it back to the proper curvature.

Everything forward of 57 Ford from the fire wall fits all models...... 300 series or 500 series.... from the firewall backwards.. nothing cross's over..... (doors, glass,etc,etc.....)But hoods and front sheetmetal all cross over.

  14. im also going to replace these rubber bumpers, both the adjustable ones and ones on the hood. 20230925_145249.jpg
the ones on the hood are just missing, hopefully itll make it not rattle once its adjusted to spec

  15. darn, this hood will work well enough for now

  16. with a lot of patience and a little brute force i got it to this point, im just going to keep this hood since its no longer as warped, and paint it.

Thats a very good fit.. a little tight on the left.... but much better. great job.
    Drive it.
I do like the fact you're hitting all the key Drivetrain points...... very well done.
When are you going to tackle the rust issues?

  20. I noticed how you have your front plate mounted. I’ve got a ‘57 front plate mount kicking around my shop somewhere. PM me your name and address and I’ll mail it off to you.
It’s great what you’ve done with the car. Congrats.
    Allan.

  21. i had no idea there was a proper plate mount! i'll pm you

  22. Found it. I pulled this off the front bumper of a ‘57 Fairlane buried in a hillside on a job site I was on in 1999. I knew I grabbed it for a reason. lol
Still have the drivers side gold fender insert.

  25. looking at the internet, it seems theres two or three types of bumpers? @Jeff Norwell has a massive stash of bumpers so maybe he would know the difference for all of them.
    heres a couple examples. s-l1200 (4).jpg 1957-ford-fairlane (12).jpeg 1957-Ford-Fairlane-500-003.jpg

i also discovered that theres supposed to be a rubber "stone deflector" on the underside of the rear bumper.

  26. You found the same auction.

  27. indeed, my bumper has the wide holes to mount the license plate directly to it, i wonder why theres different types of bumpers?

Front bumpers are all the same(style wise)......But..... there is an early and late.
The License plate holder is made for an early bumper.. meaning.. it was attached to the front bumper through the 2 square holes to the front bumper ..... as you can see in your picture(second)
A late bumper only has 2 long slots to attach a plate without the plate holder.
god only knows why the change was made...... knowing Ford..... it was probably due to cost.

My black car has the early bumper and I found a plate holder in my stash.... and used it.... On my other 57 it only has a late bumper and a plate is attached directly to it.
BTW.. the V Bar was a thing sold by Ford as a dress up thing..... same with this Hockey sticks on your second picture....another trim thing found on different models of a 500 series car..... never came on a 300 series car.
Gotta remember ,... Ford made 23 different models of 57 Ford...... and that is only the passenger car division,.... not Mercs, not Marine, Not Heavy Trucks, nor the Agriculture Division.

Heck,.. you could get matching luggage from Ford to Match your car...... anyhow,I digress.....

  29. wait that "extra trim" isnt knockoff dealer parts that everyone stuck on it? ive always thought those extras arent factory add ons. id love to find an option sheet from a dealer to see just how many options were available.

i do plan on eventually swapping the bumper if i can get my hands on one with good chrome(or at least one that isnt peeling), would be about a thousand cheaper than rechroming my bumper. rear bumper is somehow fine.
