  4. I suppose it could be. But they're far enough away from the bleachers that it looks like they'd have to be outside of the oval and a ways north of turns 3 and 4. From the early 70s or so I've never seen them use that area for pit space. It looks like that would be an area that's usually used for east side parking. There's just not enough landmarks to compare. It's too bad that you just can't pan the original pit photo from above to the left and see if that tank farm adjacent to IRP is in the background.

I guess you narrowed it down to Hugh Tucker -- or was it Hugh himself that narrowed it down?

    Marty --

I read that his car's body was slightly narrowed.

It does look like the Olds powered version, the headers on the Chrysler were slightly different.
I read that too, that they narrowed it slightly to fit the frame better. NHRA didn't notice. I don't think it was any kind of performance advantage, just aesthetics.

  13. Hugh Tucker's roadster is exactly like it was when it was retired. Still has the Chrysler in it.

“This is one of the first cars I had with [Joe] Reath. People called it ‘the Rainbow car’ because of the paint. It was all candy pearl and changed colors depending on the angle. We had three cars painted like that. I won the March Meet [in 1969] with this car. On this run, at Lions, the crew guy didn't get the oil filter screwed on all the way. Oooops.”

The hood sides needed to be cut out to clear the Chrysler.

I was born a little late to have seen push starting or the electric roller starters shown above, but it's got me curious.

I get the concept (I think) - two rollers, one or both driven electrically spin the rear wheels just like a push start.

How were the vehicles held in place while the rollers spun? I guess most rails had no front brakes. Was it just the rear tyres sitting down in the gap between the rollers that held them?

The process would work for manual transmissions and rear-pump autos, but how were front-pump autos started (assumed they retained the factory starter?).

    Cheers,
    Harv

Not too sure, but I think they were restrained by the tow/push vehicle.

Steering shock to control front end wobble, especially when the the front end lifts during acceleration, and the tires are only lightly touching the ground. One end is clamped the the tube axle, and the other at the tie rod.
