Preface: This is not a rattlecan job, but equally low tech and low budget, so I thought it could be a good option for folks comfortable with mixing paint.

I had a pretty bad scratch on my car that I tried to fix by filling it with paint applied with a fine brush and then color sanding and buffing to bring the surfaces to the same level. Welp, the color sanding stage got a little out of hand and I got down to sealer and filler, so I had to respray the area. I have a couple of spray guns and a touch up gun, but nothing that would spray a small controlled area. So in my airbrush research, I came across these little aerosol spray canisters from Preval. They come with a jar and allow you to spray any thinned paint without a gun or compressor. It was only about 8 bucks so I figured I'd give it a try.

Here's the area I needed to fix:


A little rattle can sealer:

Feather the edges:


Shot the single stage top coat with the Preval sprayer (could have been thinned a little more):


Color sand the entire area up to 2000 grit:


And buff the finish:

Rattle cans are great but shaking them is a PITA. So share your ideas for shaking the cans. I have seen the hose clamp a can to a reciprocating saw trick but I’m looking for a better mouse trap.

 

I always shake my cans upside down. I figure the pigment settles to the bottom and the ball always goes to the end of the can so I shake it upside down thinking the ball will beat the pigment off the bottom and the pigment will have to fall thru the length to get back to the other end. Hopefully being mixed into the liquid as it falls thru.

Then before I use it I spin it right side up and do it for about a minute then I'm ready to spray !!

Immersing the can in hot water for a few minutes seems to help it spray better. A 2-liter soda bottle with the top cut off makes a perfect vessel for this.

 

I used to have quite a few pix of home-made shakers but have lost all of them except this one and a couple of Sawzall types.

I had no idea either. Who would have thought There are different nozzles for run of the mill spray paint.

 

In the future if you ever do this again use a hardener like this one↓ or Krylons harder

The hardener helps the paint get a better shine and it definitely helps it set up quicker so at least you can handle it.
Also instead of using mineral spirits (mineral spirits and paint thinner evaporate way too slowly) use acetone, it evaporates faster and it causes the paint to flash off a little quicker Not to mention as it evaporates it seems to pull out most of the orange peal in the paint. The only time I won't use acetone is if it's about 100° outside and I'm spraying in the direct sunlight.
I have sprayed probably 20 travel trailers with the enamel rustoleum / tractor supply/Krylon type paints, a few even won awards at trailer shows here in California.
Enamel paint generally takes a long time to truly dry But if you use the hardener and the acetone you can get it touched dry within an hour or so avoiding a lot of the bugs that seem to be attracted to fresh paint vapor.
To anyone else reading this that has never sprayed enamel paint, The paint doesn't get truly hard or dry for a few weeks generally speaking If you stick your nose up to it and you can smell it it does not completely dry.

At any rate I am going to paint my Model A pickup with tractor supplys majic brand Massey Ferguson red with a cheap Harbor freight spray gun And then once it is completely dry I'm going to spray it with a gallon krylons acrylic clear.
For 2 gallons of red paint and a gallon of clear plus a gallon of acetone It's a little over $130- (as of three or four weeks ago).
I don't know if I will have a chip foose show car But to the average person it will look as good as anything else on the road I love my cheap paint jobs that are easy to repair if fender benders or damage happen.

 

Ask and you shall receive I did not come up with this invention that is not me in the video I saw this a few years ago and it is stuck in my head ever since...
That being said for full disclosure I have never actually spent the 10 minutes to make the gizmo lol I will say this guy in this video has got to be one of the most practical application hands-on people I think I've ever watched.
I learned how to repair an arc welder from him but that's another story.

It was a little scary, when I had to take the black rattle can to the doors on my Sanford & Son pickup 18 years ago!

 

Heat shield that I free hand engine turned and then sprayed a couple coats of Krylon metal cast and a coat of clear on the carb sided polished and cleared exhaust side. I am really impressed with the work you all do with rattle cans

 

I store them upside down as soon as I buy them, as the guys in the shop always store them upright for months on end. Then if not using within a few days I might stand upright or lay them on their side the day before I use them, sometimes in the sun, if cold inside, then only shake them for around 30 seconds before use.

So far any primer red areas are rattle cans! Krylon red oxide for the body, $38.00 for a gallon. I can afford that price, PPG is out of reach!! Besides when I get a chip or scratch, out comes the rattle can!

 

Many moons ago I did a thread on the lace job that I did on the roof of my old ‘58 Biscayne. I miss that car.

 

Body and wheels are rattle can, chassis and engine are paint brush.
The trigger handle was a good investment.
