My BF Goodrich Silvertowns have now gone almost 6 years old and looking at replacement. I would like some opinions from members using wide whites and especially how they ride on the road for both ride comfort and steering especially. I have heard a lot of good reports on Diamond Backs but they use any kind of tyre and add the whitewall later. The BF Goodrich Silvertowns have the whitewall done at the point of manufacture from what I have read. I think I may have been running underinflated over time and I have now read that 35psi is recommended pressure. I was concerned that the higher pressure might cause harder ride and more floating effect when driving. On highway driving of course you will see an extra 3psi once they get hot. This is in my 1948 Hudson that has some decent weight over front wheels. Engine is about 250lbs lighter than original Hudson 6 but the front sheet metal is still heavy duty. Any advice or suggestions appreciated.
Diamondback has just started receiving some sizes of their redesigned Auburn tires. The ones I got are great at 70-80. The ones before that were not but they replaced them free of charge. The DBIII is made on a BFG Radial T/A tire and are terrific but not available in75 series. The other series is built on a Nexen tire and I have heard nothing bad about them.
I’ve had DiamondBacks on my 46 for about 3 years now. They are made out of BF Goodrich TA radials. I have 60 series tires. They have been awesome. Just as white as when new and zero problems. I really like the DB’s because the white goes all the to behind the wheel lip and the white part on the front tires and back tires are proportionately equal to each other considering I have “big and littles”
I have used Diamondback tires on several vehicles, most recently was a set of wide white DBIII's (BFG TA Radials) on my truck. The ride quality and handling are decent, and the white walls are nice and bright. As far as tire pressure goes, a lot depends on the vehicle. With a 454 the truck is nose heavy so I run 3 more psi in the front tires, 35psi /32psi cold. On my OT Hot Rod I have to run 18 psi in the rear tires to get full width tire contact.
I have been doing research and I like the Diamond Back 111. I have 215/70/15 and they have that size. Not sure if they ship direct or use our one and only vintage/hot rod tire distributor here who charge like the proverbial bull. With our dollar, freight, goods and service taxes etc etc you can easily double the price you see on their website. So probably $600 a tire Australian dollars.
If you can, buy through Summit. I've found it's the best way, delivered to your door. That's the easy part. Borderforce/quarantine don't like loose tyres (they can harbour bugs etc.) so be prepared for a hangup and fee from them. Mounted tyres are okay.
Paul, the last time my fronts needed replacing, rather than Silvertown radial whites, I ordered the 'short narrows" from Diamondback. They sent Nankang tires that they had shaved off the outside lettering and added their whitewall. 16k miles, I still like them a lot. In US they shipped direct to my home. I run 35 psi in front, after I had a wheel bead bend from driving on poorly maintained US freeways. I hope this helps.
Just looked at Antique Tyres online store and Auburn Deluxe in 820x15 with 4" whitewall are A$799. Is John Cain in Newcastle still going as he used to sell Diamondbacks?
