I am convinced that the vast majority of people that go to that either never read that, or anything by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and if they did, they did not get the intended message.

  2. Between 1916 and 1924, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone and John Burroughs embarked on a series of camping trips. They called themselves the Vagabonds, but they camped in style. Numerous support staff set up and took down camp, cooked, took photographs, and maintained the cars and equipment trucks.

  3. So this looks wild, but I'm just picturing these old cars going on trails where I take my Jeep (or any trails up here really), and I'd be on edge taking an old car into the bush. If my Jeep gets stuck, I'd just be annoyed. If my old car did I'd be heartbroken.

Think about the road conditions in the teens and twenties or lack there. The trick is to have as bad as this sounds a "beater" old car. Something mostly stock for just having fun in. It's easy to find something workable for under 10, harder yet doable under 5. So what if there is rust or dents? Of course it does involve adding to the harem so you may need to clear that with someone, you problem not mine. After all how much does one of these new 4x4 things cost? Oh and some new photos. . .

  5. That seemed to be the entire philosophy behind the Feral Sports Car Club.

I like the juxtaposition of the new OT's on the paved highway and the old tin on the gravel. One group comin, one goin. 100 years of "progress" and most of us on here are ready to go back.

I love being outside...I love camping (the more rustic, the better) and I love old cars. I could prolly be convinced to do this kinda stuff.

It looks and sounds fun but I had enough of the "period" stuff when I did the black powder/mountain man Rendezvous's, all early 1800's period gear. And with my physical problems, my camping days are behind me. Now when I was younger I would have loved doing it!

  12. John Burroughs was born in Roxbury NY, 10 miles from my hometown Grand Gorge.

I believe H.R.P.'s photo is taken at the Burroughs family homestead Woodchuck Lodge in Roxbury or at least that is what we were taught in school

Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone stayed both the Roxbury, and Grand Gorge Hotels both long gone.

As a side note many of the Henry Ford camping trips were to scout out location for plants and dealerships, Henry Ford had a camping trip to Green Island NY north of Albany, just west of Troy.

The site became a leaf spring, radiator and heater core plant.

I might even buy one just to do this.
But... I'm out at the first sight of an LS swap vehicle or Avocado Toast at the campfire. Just saying...

This sounds like too much fun.
Would be nice to be forced to slow down and see more than we do now days. Going to have to keep an eye out for the right rig.

  18. Oh for sure. I did a very quick look through hemmings last night and pre 30s cars can be quite affordable, which surprised me. I think I just didn't grasp just how many Model A's and T's and what not where made back then.

I think like Vintage Baseball, this kind of thing doesn't exist north of the border (although it might, I've been wrong before)

That is Priest Hole on the John Day River. River was WAY over normal level. It was really loud. That was the 1st night of 3 night 4 day trip.

I've camped out of a '31 roadster before, it was a blast and there's just enough room for two people traveling lightly, but it wasn't a 'period correct' thing.

I'll have to see if there's any locals that do this kinda thing, I know one of my Dad's friends is into period correct driving events with the funny hats and waxed mustaches, he would know.

Wouldn't be too difficult to make one of my new builds possibly fit the part with a wheel change, either.

My wife and I vacationed UP in Da U.P. recently. We headed north in the O/T Suburban with da 1958 Tour-A-Home camper in tow. We mad it about 60 miles before da trans headed south. Drove home, loaded another car and headed back UP da next morning. We lived in a tent about 100 yards from da Greatest Lake of dem all for 10 days.. No wifi...no lectric...nothing. I absolutely loved it.

We had a speakeasy, no jazz but live bluegrass so I'm not sure if you want to count that or not.

I think shows where you can camp are awesome. The Jalopy Jam Up is sort of in that spirit, with folks bringing campers, but also many folks bringing just regular ol tents and setting up accommodations. The party goes late and the bands are rocking, drinks are flowing, and it's all good because nobody has to drive. It also helps keep the cost of attendance in check too, since hotel rooms are a fortune and you're really barely spending any time there other than to sleep.

As for this particular idea, I think it's alright. It's sort of like TROG except instead of racing, it's camping. My cars are too new for this type of deal, and I'm not much of a fan of fashion aesthetic of reenacting the time period, but the idea of a show or run where you camp is a solid one.
