    Hello,

We were fortunate enough to see a version of Eddie Hill’s Pontiac powered FED at the 1960 Bakersfield Smokers March Meet. It was during the smallest wheel version that came out West to race against the “Best in The West.”
    upload_2023-10-4_2-43-20.png

It was an unusual build as the whole race car had the requisite big slicks in the rear, but the FED had the smallest front wheel size of any drag car built so far.

The Pontiac powered FED was fast and things were looking up for the group from Texas. But, the eliminations proved a different outcome. YRMV

This time, things did not go as well as planned.

There is something special about a FED running in a cloud of smoke, wheels up and crossed-up like a roundy-round car

    Cheers,

  10. Im amazed at the last three dragster pictures, all with tires ablaze and wheels up, but butterflirs all closed!

The ones that crack me up are like 64542. The engine gernaded and the tires are still all wrinkled up going for gold.

  12. If you look closely, all 3 dragsters have the butterflies open just a bit...doesn't take much!

Ed Wright’s 56 Chevy and John Frith’s 57 Ford. I read a couple of years ago it had been found and was being restored but have seen nothing about it since.

So many Top Fuel racers chose those Plymouth engines, and Garlits stayed with Dodge !

What makes those photos so amazing is the way those 60's photographers positioned themselves to get those kind of shots, also, timing was everything.
They had to be pretty fearless too!

Probably because they are going Up in the wheelstand and the driver is doing his job.
