    Still collecting parts for mine.

I got a cam from a regrinder and he mentioned it was a Winfield grind@ .330 lift. Does anyone have a list of Winfield banger cam grinds?

  2. Has anyone mounted Model A axles, engine, and transmission onto a stock T frame before?

Just bought me a '31 Ford model A sports coupe to join my two '28 Chevy bangers, so not much brand loyalty going on here, ha ha.

It has glass fibre fenders/wings, running boards and aprons, lighter more speed?.

Knowing nothing about Fords I didn't spot the 'B' marked police head and Carter 245 SD carb on it when I bought it.

It does go surprisingly well, I think I may have stumbled upon a ready made hot rod!

Presuming it's got a stock cam, would anyone like to make an educated guess at the HP might be with those mods?

It just needs all the bling taken off and a little rubber rake now to be almost perfect.

    Who's a happy chappy then :D

Here it is parked next to my '28 Chevy racer

This is Dyno results that Dennis Piranio made a few years ago. Dennis passed away from COVID, his wife Beth still has the parts business, but the machine shop is no longer there. This will give you an idea of modifications change performance. The dyno runs were in Texas, lower altitude.

    Thanks, that's interesting stuff.

I'll measure the valve lift to check for a possible cam change.

I kept the t rear but model a engine and trans. Model a front axle. This was while in mock-up, I’ve completed all the fabrication and I’m now painting it. IMG_8068.jpeg

  11. And where was it parked? Looks like a local show. I'd recommend Little Ellingham mid-August next year if you fancy a run out.

That was at the FOT, a charity show near Eastbourne, Norfolk would be a good run out, but no problem for a well sorted Model A.
I have to fix the rattling timing gears and sort out the juice brakes first.

  13. Is a B distributor considered a perfectly adequate setup for a mild hop-up motor with higher compression, downdrafts, cam, etc., or is something like an FSI a requirement for this scenario?

  14. I considered my Winfield engine a mild build. 6-1 head, downdraft, B cam and a lightened flywheel. I ran a stock B dist. for a few years until I found an early Mallory.

  15. Thanks!

Is that the engine in your avatar? Winfield S carb?

  16. Yes it is. Head is Winfield, carb is Winfield BB model S

Getting to know a bit more about Ford bangers now,.

The four bolt pump on the police head had me fooled till I spotted the blanked off pump hole, yep my Model A has a B engine in it!

Took a look at the rattling timing gears and I reckon it's best to avoid aftermarket composite gears!
I broke a few more teeth off with my fingers, glad it was trailered home as a few more miles might have killed it.
Am i right in thinking an ally gear is the best replacement?

Other than that the engine looks very good, bearings have been re-babbited with plenty of shims left, and they feel good.

As it's a B engine with police head could I expect around 55+ hp?

  18. I always use an aluminium gear. Worth swapping on a new crank gear if you can.

  19. Count me as new to the running driving banger club. Bought this about a year ago- 1928 rpu, hauled it to a friend’s place for show and tell. He suggested we back it into the spare bay. With some great minds and spare hands, including the guy I bought it from, FE74D0C0-8422-43DD-8899-FA39DB952A81.jpeg it was running and driving in a couple of hours, spread over a few consecutive Mondays. It has been a riot so far.

Depends on the cam and carb. my guess is more, but not with that timing gear.

Thanks, is there a prefered UK supplier to avoid Chineseium parts or do they all buy in from the same source?

Made me grin, maybe best to get checking the valve lift next.

  24. I normally try to use a Model A drugs mule with space in their suitcase… failing that, I’ve had Adam from Down to Earth ship engine parts in before. Drop me a PM as I have some stuff to get soon.

I'm interested to know more about these magneto's
How do they function in a 'street engine', given they have little to no advance curve?

Working on getting it running again. Looking for a different distributor. Any ideas?

    Me to,
I have a couple of these. They were made to run in stationary or constant rpm situations so advance wasn't necessary.
A couple things i have found out so far is 6 volt system is necessary and using a manual cable may be a way to get around the advance curve issue.
