Metal case, frayed cord, and no guard. No thanks. Count me out.

At the Btt50's, I got some metal discs from Bad Dog Tools. Designed to be used in place of grinding discs & cutoff wheels. Seem to work well so far. They *are* aggressive, hold on tight. I have a new healthy respect for them, the 4.5" tried to eat my leg, but just tore up the pants - fortunately. Not for "light-touch" use. The small super-thin disc isn't to replace the .040" cutoff wheels sadly, but sharpening drill bits or tig tips. Lifetime warranty, haven't needed it yet. No more blk-dust all over, just lots of metal-dust. They weren't cheap, but look to be well made. So far, I can hardly tell it's been used. Other discs haven't been - yet. We'll see how it goes over time.

When you speak of the green or purple disc, all I ever seen were the rolock sanding disk. Am I missing something?

  5. Roloc is the attachment method, green corp or Cubitron 2 is the product family

It isn't fair to blame "West of LA" products for being inferior, but I do recommend if you take advantage of the savings that you perhaps invest in a Kevlar pull over. This was my torso just an hour after the damn thing shattered and hit me in the ribs. I was working alone in the shop replacing quarter panels and wheelhouses when it happened. I literally thought I was holding my guts in with my hand and was afraid to pull up my shirt. Doc said I was lucky to have some extra beef on me. It's not fat...it's the swelling. Yeah, that's it, swelling. That's the ticket.

Thanks guys, learned something today. I'll start drinking now. :)

  9. I only use a 4" old Makita for cutoff work, with either Norton or Sait discs (I used cheaper Home Depot/Home Base :) in the past) and I'm mostly a gouger. Haven't had one blow up on my at home (they use cheaper discs at work).

Today I took delivery of 3 (indestructible) 4 inch metal cutoff discs that are supposed to cut steel, stone, ceramic and wood? I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff. We'll see?

  19. Don’t use large cut of wheels.
Only the small ones for a die grinder.
used hundreds of HF ones. So far so good.
Bought a bench and electric shear. Probably saved enough not buying cut off wheels that these tools paid for themselves a couple times over.
Final cuts are hand shears. Haven’t have a shear bust

Extensive use has proven to me that 1 3m green disc will cut further than 10 HF disc's.
    Making 3m the cheaper solution.
The post's about metal discs have convinced me to give them another try( it's been many yrs since I last tried them). Will be worth the peace of mind if they now work as well as posted.

    There's that.
She doesn't keep track of the money I spend on car parts, but she does track the expense of the emergency room visits. I lie about the former, the latter is hard to hide.

My FIL was a pipe fitter. Working out on the field both his dewalts quit him. Only store close by was a harbor freight so he purchased a new grinder there. He got the job done and came home. He gave it to me and said he’d only used it for a few days but had already purchased a new dewalt and didn’t want any chepos in his toolbox. First time I used it I was building some gates at my house with square tubing and grinding the welds down. All of a sudden I heard a boom and everything went black. I ran to the hose bib and washed my face off and it took a few minutes get my sight back. After inspecting everything I figured that where the cord enters the grinder itself at rubber boot it had blown up for whatever reason. I was wearing shaded safety glasses and it melted them in half right at the center. I tore it apart and threw it away immediately. Scared the hell out of me. I always wear a shield now when grinding.

    Krylon;
If those are from Bad Dog, the disc for cutting wood is different from the metal/ceramic/concrete one. Had a long talk w/the "rep", & since no-one was around, he talked about the discs & drills at length. Not enough $$$ to acquire the drills, but they work(& look) like masonry drills(I have a set from someone else from awhile back, & haven't used them much, will be used only for a drill press, as they don't "drill", they "burn" thru). Big difference in their products is the way the abrasives are attached(& I can't remember, but I think the abrasives are different, too) - it's not furnace-brazed or similar. Withstands very high heat. I'll see just how well they work, longterm, but that'll take awhile anyways.
Be interesting to read what you guys think of yours, esp if from a different mfgr.

We only use Mirka cutoff discs at work. Never had one explode, and never heard of anybody who has.

I buy the 4-1/2" cutting disc off of eBay, 25 for like 20 bucks, used them now for about 7 yrs and never had one blow up. Only problem I've had with them is me either dropping it off of the bench or stepping on them.

They last decently, compared to the name brand it's about 4-1/2 cheapest to 3 disc's of the major name brands. But with cost of each disc I come out ahead.

One trick to make them last longer is I make several passes on thicker stuff (1/8" or thicker). I don't plunge cut and force the disc thru, I make a pass about .050 deep then come back and do it again and again. I let the disc do the work.

I have had one disc come apart, brand new major brand name, hadn't even touched metal yet. Installed, pulled switch and it blew up. Came apart in about 5 or 6 pieces. AND I always look at any disc I install, new or used and never seen anything on this disc to even doubt its use.

I've used probably over 100 disc's in my home shop from ebay in the last couple yrs with no problems.

    ..
