    Hello,

That is a nice photo of the old Travelodge Motel in Signal Hill portion of Long Beach. It is just about a mile uphill from the Traffic Circle going West. If we were on our PCH mode of travel to our surf spots in Seal Beach, Huntington Beach and all points South, we passed this area as we approached the Traffic Circle back then. We also used PCH to get to the Circle Drive-In which was located just off of the Circle.

The location is about 3 miles East of our last house on the Westside of Long Beach. But this portion of PCH was a frequent part of the highway we always took to get South. The remnants of the Travelodge is now called Sea Rock Inn, a hotel… ?

Over the years, the Travelodge went under and different places redeveloped the area. But, how does a motel go up in status of being advertised as a “hotel?” and be rated 2.5 stars? Back in the late 50s and early 60s, this place was the closest nice motel that served the overnight hospital families, just down the PCH highway and the overnight guests from the Big Bowling alley, Java Lanes, on the next block when they had big time events. Interesting that the wheel covers have the larger 54 emblems. Guessing the Thunderbird development was ahead of the 55 new car since it came out earlier in 54 than the 55 car. By the time it did come out the 55 covers were ready.

That’s an interesting design/feasibility mule to check proof of concept for the early ‘bird.

  17. I'm glad they developed the design further. That would have died an early death and we wouldn't have the T-bird as we knew it.
