  1. James Laga has been sharing them. They are AI. Very interesting stuff.

Call me a dinosaur but I just won't drink the Kool-aid, I guess I just don't need AI to keep my hot rod juices flowing.
It's like what has happened to music production and its various "enhancements".
I'm not necessarily a Joe Walsh follower but I do share his view on the direction the world has moved.

Wow. But if any of you folks are interested in a robot that might be a little more era-correct there's one in the "Antiquated" classifieds here:
    robot | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
I dunno if it can draw a cat though.
This whole AI thing really has me spooked. Eye-opening.

Boy this has been an interesting thread to say the least.
I have been a contributing member to the "FAS" on Fridays for the past 4 years.
    It's my weekly pleasure.
I usually post my photography, but I have also posted my actual pieces of artwork as well.

I always feel guilty when I post older work, because I was too lazy to get off my ass and sit down to do the work.

I got motivated and inspired last night, to do another one of these dedicated pieces, that will turn into a laminated place-mat, there are several members of the H.A.M.B., that have received laminated
place-mats from me, and they know who they are.

This particular one just got finished, and it will be shipped out today to a certain well known person here on the H.A.M.B., I wont include his name, but if you recognize the car, then you know.
    It's a surprise, so don't tell him!

This piece is 16" X 17" nobody does this stuff anymore, but the element of a place-mat on your wall or dinner table, is a very cool thing to do and to give away, with out expecting any thing in return, I am sure AI cant fathom the joy of creating art and then giving it away to those that can really appreciate it !

    IMG_9017.jpg
    IMG_9018.jpg

I am with @Jeff Norwell on his reply's on the element of the AI stuff that @Ryan posted.
That stuff is cool, but there isn't any "soul" to it, there isn't any flaws or micro wobbles that actually let you know that a real human, sat down at a table and did the pencil work or the ink work, to me, that is really where all of the fun is, in creating it.

I am never going to be good at drawing tires and tread and chrome as good as Norwell, but that being said, every time I see his work, I get inspired, to try to do the best I can.

And whats really more important and especially fun to me is, when I do stuff like what you see here, and knowing full well that it isn't going to be perfect or accurate, so knowing that, full well when starting, I just go at it with the attitude,
"I don't give a shit about accuracy" and then I can relax and enjoy the endeavor, as I create the piece.

AI is here to stay, no doubt about that, no use getting all riled up about it, its a tool, it has its place, but that being said, AI relies on electricity, if the plug gets knocked out of the electrical socket, it cant grow a hand, and plug itself back in, at least so far it cant !

    Your result's may vary !
Thanks to all, that voiced their considered opinions !

This AI BS is a bit too esoteric for me to even get into it (whatever it is).

I was singularly unimpressed until I got to the second to the last picture (the black fastback with the "LaSalle-esque" grille). I just plain like that design.

Ive been using Midjourney and the results are frankly scary AF. We're also using GPT for writing and some other AI for voice overs and scratch tracks on video... and its sooo hard to pick apart – there are correct pauses, cadence, breaths... its full blown bananas. I'd like to share some relevant things I've been working on but the NDA says I cant so... sorry

That said, its all currently hitting like the kauros in "Blink" (the Malcom Gladwell book) You know it isn't fully right but you can't point at any single thing to prove it. It's all by feel. Does it have a soul? Nah. It's the uncanny valley of design.

the examples are interesting, how they were produced was through implementation of tools.
to say they or any art or man made object has or has no soul is projection.
we all use tools to get better results.
the tragedy I'm afraid is that humans will use their brains less and less as their tools do all their thinking for them.

Currently one of the easiest ways to separate AI art from other types of art is if text makes any sense (AI will make the shape of what it thinks a letter should look like, especially in the form of a sign or emblem, but it rarely spells a word or even looks like English) and also if there are any human forms in it, look at the hands. AI has a really hard time drawing 5 appropriate fingers. In the examples shown, you can see the woman's fingers are pretty messed up in a way that a human drawing would not have. An interesting coincidence for fans of the original Westworld movie, the hands were what set apart the robots from the people, predicted 50 years ago. Number and position of teeth is another giveaway for human faces.

Hand shapes and text and a few other issues will likely be solved in the next 6 months or less though, so that trick isn't going to last long. You never could believe everything you see on the Internet anyway, now it's just for new and different reasons.

    OK... I'm testing MidJourney now...

When we take in something from the past we instinctively generate physical responses. What was it like in 1958 when Charlie was tooling along in this 36 3W? How happy was Mr Van Damme when he took delivery of this 1932 Packard Twin Six? Remember when your uncle showed up in the Black Jade 63½ Galaxie? AI will NEVER touch that. @Ryan is right about how some won't care to ever reference that whether it's writing or art. I guess I have to quit trying to put it in words because sometimes the silence of thought has more power than AI ever will. It only "thinks" what you told it too. Creative powers are human, anything else is a pretender. Yeah we created AI. So what. It doesn't know and never will know the perfect stance to a 39-40 Tudor Sedan. And then it will call it a "Two-der" like tudor trim on an old house, never catch the Ford nomenclature as intended. You know, Fordor and Tudor as in 4 door and 2 door. Fuckin shit will probably call a rear spare on a Model A a Continental Kit too. How ya like me now...

Ok, let's try something better or real. Can you turn that print I posted on pg 2 into an image with that tool? That would be impressive.

Windshield is weird too... Details just aren't there. Although I was surprised that it illustrated the car without fenders...

I'm noticing it does some era cars better than others... For example, when I play around with early Porsche stuff it does much better than early hot rod stuff.

Getting a computer to understand basic facts about how the physical world works, turns out to be a really difficult problem.

Or maybe we humans are just incredibly competent.

    Here's a weird one...

Prompt: Imagine Alex Xydias prepared a Porsche 904 for Bonneville in 1965.

    concept4.jpg

So I think what we've learned here is that MidJourney is quite a bit better than any of the other AI software I've used, but still... It's much better at conceptualizing than it is at literal imagery...

Keep in mind, MidJourney has only been gathering intelligence for about 9 months... We should try this again in about 3....

So the prompt is strictly verbiage? Can you "show it a picture" and prompt that way too?

There are AI examples where you can do that... but I dunno know about MidJourney. I've literally been using it all of about 15 minutes.

It's all coming. And we'll be scared of it just like we were scared of telescopes, electricity, automobiles, women voters, etc... People will abuse it and do horrible things with it. People will embrace it and do wonderful things with it. The world will change completely- not because of AI itself, but all the surrounding advancements. It's a large cog in a bigger machine and we just can't see what that world looks like so it seems scary.

Folks keep talking about how it will replace humans. Yes to some degree, but human beings are scary creatures. We will adapt and use everything and anything to our advantage. Honestly send a colony of humans to the scariest inhabitable planet you can think of with ridiculous monsters and we'd have that shit domesticated and bringing us our slippers or roasting on a spit in no time.

I guess what I mean is that AI is going to push limits and get VERY good at emulating human creativity and abilities, and we will respond by pushing our own abilities to the next level. The competition of AI will push us to think faster and more outside the box.

Robots and AI are coming. Medically and Cybernetically enhanced humans are coming too. We're already there in the smallest most innocent looking ways.

I can deal with it I'm a scifi nut. :p

If Buick offered a two seater in 1953, it would look like this.

  26. I’d drive the shit outta that thing….

and as far as the original designs, they look very Pininfarina to my untrained idiot eye? I like them.

    Good word

Stopped in here this morning, went OhnO, clicked the go 'back arrow' and ran.
Stumbled in again and found the word from Gary.
But hey, muscle cars and some customs bummed me out because they take energy away from the pre-war contraptions.:D
It is a big world and cars ( used to ) show the variety of taste

The 904 is the best car I've ever driven and probably my favorite car of all time... And Alex is... well, Alex... so you know this AI manufactured race car would dominate on every level.

    Meanwhile, here's a new prompt:

Imagine Ford had continued to work with Lola and Shelby to create a sports car for the mass market in 1964. What would it look like?

Last one... and I'll stop, I swear.

Prompt: Imagine Bill Mitchell had writer's block and couldn't come up with a design for the C2 Corvette. So, he contacted Pininfarina and they worked together to create the new Corvette.

    concept8.jpg

Good god... it's as if a GTO had sex with a Sting Ray and I'm here for it.
