    I like this a lot.

I also like how Ryan was on the fence about AI at the beginning of the thread, and now has powdery nostrils from it :D:D:D. The imagination to paper (or screen) is wild and fun to see.

The tool I see in this, if it can create an accurate image of something, we could colorize and see what our vision looks like before we commit to a color or color combination. I've seen many a supremely valuable car screwed by lack of vision or poor choices. One example, a Pierce Arrow 12 roadster painted an awful shade akin to 79 Camaro teal metallic. Error? Not if the owner truly liked it, but in that rarified air seldom will you hear "I screwed up...". Probably devalued the car by almost 6 figures. This could adjust for period and nail it before the damage is done. A win.

I went in head first with an open mind man. And I've obsessed over it for 48 hours. The typical use case is this:

    1. You are given a prompt... And you type in /imagine and then a description of what you want.

    2. You are given four images to choose from. From those four, you can pick one to use or add further prompts to change the image.

But, there are also a ton of other "off the menu" commands you can use as well... and I've been studying like mad trying to figure all of those out and how they work. They make MidJourney far more powerful and I don't think I've even scratched the surface with them.

Still, I think it works better as a novelty than as a tool right now. It's a bit frustrating and really limited if you know what you want, but just don't have the talent to make it real. BUT, if you don't know what you want... and have a vivid imagination, it's quite fun to play with.

Here's an example. I've always liked the artist Hieronymus Bosch. I don't really care for his subject matter, but I love the way he used dark vs. light... And lots of color...

So, what if you stuck that old bastard in a Time Machine and had him jump forward a few hundred years? But it was a long ride and to keep him entertained, you just played The Jetsons on a continuous loop... And when he finally lands, he lands on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the middle of Speed Week in 1949... You show him the scene for 20 seconds, then take him back to the year 1500 and tell him to paint what he saw. What would you get?

    concept18.jpg

Pretty rad, right? It's not fine art by any means... and I'm sure Hiero would be super pissed if you put his name to it... But it's novel to see what the machine spits out. It's fun.

Art is a way to express emotions...

emotions seem to have a chemical basis. AI is a long long ways from there.

I think AI is perfectly capable of producing emotion right now. And I think it will get really good at it a whole lot quicker than we might like. I think that's one of the dangers... one of the scary parts... It's gonna be quite a ride:

    concept20.jpg

The thing is, I don't think our generation will be capable of collecting artificial emotion the same way we do organic emotion. If I knew that little boy above was real, that image would mean a lot more to me... But I know it's artificial, so it doesn't affect me in the same way.

My kids on the other hand? Who knows man... This shit is gonna get weird.

This reminds me of the Gimli Glider just a different period...it was real though not AI

@Ryan as much as you say it's not fine Art I think you produced some incredible images that I would I would say IS pretty passable as Done to the nines...

That Corvette knockoff with the lights just needs a trip to photoshop to fix imperfections and then it too would be camera ready so to speak...

You are a Graphic Artist and you are a natural it seems for this technology...

    Here is a Test.......
and its completely OT... so delete it if need be.

which one is (A)-a real Painting, which one is (B)-AI ...
and which one is (C)- a digital piece of art using digital tools draw,Paint to create?(meaning.. you actually have to have a level of talent ,drawing and painting skills to do this)

    A.jpg B.jpg C.jpg

3 is my favorite... I don't much care for 2... and 1 is interesting and well done...

    Also, this is really uncomfortable.

3-(C) The great Gregory Manchess oil painter
2-(B) Straight up AI.... Just prompts
1-(A) digital art using a program like Corel Painter(you have to actually draw and paint the image using specific custom or installed brushes.)

    Interesting.....

that is the concern as I see it, not which one has "soul" but which one was created with an artist's creativity and skill, hand, eye, mind.
now we have introduced, if it matters to the viewer, doubt.
everywhere we look we are being manipulated by our interpretation of what we see.
too many viewers do not see beyond the image..

I still see the tool has value, the images it can produce can get the desired reaction
but for me it has little value when held up to the "true" artist

I tried to reproduce the MLK portrait through AI and using only one prompt.

Acrylic portrait of Martin Luther King on canvas. Brushstrokes. Texture.

    concept23.jpg

I think this better illustrates the depth of the real thing. And I guess in a way, the emotion...

Also... to keep things on topic, here's a photo of MLK preaching to the starting field of a Sebring race in 1964.

    I completely agree Paul
When I mentioned about "Soul".I was trying to encompass all you mentioned for one word.
Another thing to mention.. is ANY computer art is backlit. and very...... vibrant.
When viewing original art.... that vibrancy .. is not really there unless caught by a professional in a transparency....
anyhow..I am nether a hater or a Lover of it....
My concern is more with things like Policing, security, Health and the such.
Yes. this new AI is in its infancy... and how long before it can think for itself, wondering...
"These Humans are a complete Pain in the Ass,....delete them"

    Hahahah..

Indeed..... and it took how long?.... Nano seconds.
Imagine the post office wanting a new commemorative stamp of MLK....?
"Why are we Paying that idiot $25 k for a Painting of MLK?.....
.....Get Sally down in HR to prompt these.... and we need to get to press by 3.pm!"

I think the technology is more profound than we can even imagine. It blurs the lines between what's real and what isn't already... when that line is no more, what happens?

And it comes at a time when we really need to be able to lean on the morals of mankind... We need to rely on people doing the right thing by other people... We need to have faith in mankind.

    Right?

This is not that fucking time man.

Oh... and to keep it on topic, here's a rough sketch of a streamliner done by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1949... Apparently, an alien is driving which is somehow fitting.

The concern is expressed in not how it will fit into current society and corporate/job structure, but how it will drastically alter them in ways we can't imagine and plan for.
It will gain popularity and provide some great benefits, but also 'learn' through success and rapidly accelerate bland consensus and devalue out of the box artistry. As an example, name a commercially successful music group that doesn't grid. John Bonham, Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich wouldn't earn a good living being a drummer these days.
The 2 Roth examples had none of his flair for sharp lines and contrasts. They were interesting and caught the eye, but not the way his designs did.
AI will be able to hone in and create closer to the artist/designer/programmer's concept, so as a tool it will allow the skilled to rapidly generate copious amounts of proofs. How will it affect the gifted and non-mainstream creators when the sheer volume is too much to wade through?

I am curious about what a Sid Mead - 1950s pulp fiction paperback mashup would look like. I'd guess it would be 85% bad, but 5% interesting.

I think this may be the best off topic thread ever.
all this place is missing is the actual face to face human contact, and it sure feels like it doesn't miss that by much.

Here's a quick Sid Mead attempt:

I'm trying real hard to keep in on topic! Here's an attempt by GM in 1965 to compete with the Ford GT:

...and we are for the most part discussing how it affects art only.
Near term, sports teams with AI plays.
Longer term, Corporate planned and arranged marriages for best possible outcomes.
Selected housing to keep people civil (peaceful).

How does elevator music affect you? Are you going along with the accepted plan?
Sorry Ryan, this is way off topic, but this is why there is concern. Delete if too far. That has no discernible Sid Mead in it, but those would sell to a publisher of 50 cent books.

    Fucking Unbelievable...Stunning work really.

I'll still do my own Art though at a snails pace albeit and proudly at that...:)

A career in Graphic Art however might be a very loooong shot...

I'm a sick man... I can relate anything back to cars. Seriously. Anything.

What we are essentially talking about here is a global brain. A space that knows everything, all the time, and can do just about anything without human intervention... right?

Well then, my friends... Imagine it is 1965 and Ford has acquired the top designers and engineers from Chevrolet (sorry Bill), Porsche, Jaguar, Ferrari, and Alpine. Together they are known as TASK FORCE SIX (and they fucking know everything) and their mission is to create a car that will win Le Mans as well as take your wife out to dinner. Mid-mounted FE motor.

    concept29.jpg

Hey... if we are about to taken over by AI we might as well have fun while it's all going down...

Imagine Syd Mead, H.R. Giger, and M.C. Escher, sitting in a futuristic intergalactic coffee shop, looking at their laptop computers and saying to themselves, remember when we painted with air brushes and did linoleum cuts to make prints?
