Hello, The "pits" at the Mines Field, California road race. It looks as if it was in an airport hangar, since the original Los Angeles airfield, now known as LAX was there in those early days. It came from an article in the April 1951 Hot Rod Magazine. But, the whole story was in the USC University Library Archives, a well known historical files location in Los Angeles, CA. Jnaki That open area was barren back then and the winds from the ocean are perfect for a take off, West, over the ocean. As the coastal history goes, 90% of the time, the takeoffs are West over the ocean. The landings are from the Palm Springs area in the valley descending across all of the metropolitan Los Angeles area to the airport right on the ocean. The other 10+% is when the Santana Winds (not a concert) blow from the valleys and mountains toward the ocean, then the takeoff is headed East over all of the Los Angeles population below.
