History 1932 Ford Altered “The Outcast” looking for information

We are searching for information on this 1932 Ford Altered “The Outcast”. There were a lot of owners, drivers and different people who have contributed to its California drag race years. Richard Bill, George Cerny, Von Dutch, Chuck Jones, Sandoval brothers and Ron Boren are what we know so far. From 1953-1960 The Outcast land speed raced at Bonneville with Moon Equip. being its main sponsor and was painted in the cowl. It also raced at Paradise Mesa, Santa Ana, Lyons and Kingdon. It turned everything from 13s to 10.0 with flatheads, Cadillacs and hemis. This car was bright yellow prior to it being white with candy red flames and the Von Dutch striping, flames, numbers and mural. We also know it was chopped (same chop) and then painted yellow with a Dago axle, nose down with no front brakes sometime in the late 40s early 50s. That brings me to the big question: Who owned this car before Richard Bill? Who chopped it, made it an hot rod and painted it yellow? Hot Rod Magazine (1954, Santa Ana article) noted that Richard Bill was the owner and Cerny owned the Cadillac in 1954. We are not finding anything pre ‘53– which is where we need the most help. We have a lot of information but are struggling to connect several dots and the time line, specifically 40s- 1953. Feel free to post photos, stories, videos… whatever you have, don’t be shy! Let’s unearth this history and see what we come up with. The car is found and is being cleaned up to be displayed.

As mentioned in our conversation, Chuck Jones was associated with "The Sidewinder" from Long Beach and George Cerny owned the 32 sedan when I took this video.

Do you have any idea what year those first two were taken? The ones in primer. That’s basically what it looks like now. It sat under a tree since 1961ish.

 

Thanks! Those are about all of the info we’ve found on the HAMB. There’s got to be more somewhere on its early history.

 

Hello,

George Cerny's chopped station wagon in the far left of the photo. So, in looking at the magazines that show Cerny's station wagon, one could assume it is a specific time period. Most magazines are usually two to three months ahead or behind, which way you look at it. If I submit a photo in March of 2023, it is for publication in June of 2023.

I'm sorry the photos didn't have a date, took them off the internet. The round Pontiac tail lights didn't come out until 1948 so probably real late 40's early 50's.

Ok, man those are real cool photos. What did you search for when you found them?

 

Not sure how I found them, been on my hard drive for a long time.
I would try "early California drag racing photos" and "early lakes and Bonneville photos" .
Probably a ton of pics to go through. Somebody may know how to narrow it down more.

This was sent to us and taken in Fresno in 1960

 

This is the Sandoval brothers version, with a Dodge that later went into their Bantam competition coupe. Jnaki has it just right.

 

What doesn’t make sense to me is Jnaki’s video of this car being yellow in 58/59…
It was white with the VonDutch striping and flames as early as the 54 Bonneville event, and clear into 2023…

 

I just looked at the video and the only yellow I see is the rims...I think it's being suggested prior to the White it was a yellow Hotrod...perhaps 47 to the 50s...

 

Always fun to watch info and photos turn up on old race cars. Can we see some current as found photos of the car? Good luck with the restoration. Bob

I see what you are saying, though. It is both yellow and white on my screen at different times… Wish it was clearer, but it is pretty cool either way!

Is this what you are referring to as Moon being a main sponsor?

 

Apparently @MsPearl is in possession of it and I hope may share some of it's restoration in imagery with details. Perhaps they are making a book and are being private about those elements, however I would think sharing a few images on one of the greatest Hotrod/Custom platforms bar none regarding such things could be just part of the story really of which they are part of really...

Heck I just saw a Hamber in another Thread sharing restorations of some seriously iconic rides...everything here is precious to the Big Picture...thanks to any sharing these glimpses to what moving and shaking in the workshop...

Another ride, The Uncertain T has been spoken of with it's being being guarded which is unfortunate in a way as we all here just love the History and Culture...

I always share as I find it, why...because if any Hamber was to leave us suddenly I'd be glad I shared something that put a smile on their face to take with them...

 

Agreed, this is an epic car that I have known for a long time and thought I would be the one sharing it’s story, but alas, destiny has put it in Mr. Hascall’s hands instead of mine…

Well @House13 I guess you perhaps have much to add to this ressurection that is unfolding as we speak...The silver lining in not securing the vintage history is seeing it given it's due...I hope it's shared both visually and in narrative...Ryan could even showcase it in a Blog...

@House13 the car was yellow prior to the 1953-1954 white paint job. Here is a photo of it in 1949.


Between 53-60 the white paint job had been spotted in Numerous times. For instance, in the 1960 wrinkled photos I’ve posted in this thread, the flames and numbers are not the same as they were in 54 and notice that the exhaust outlet in the bottom of the cowl for the Cadillac was fixed, smoothed over when the hemi went in. The Jnaki video, you can see grind marks and bare metal spots on the rear wall.

 

Yes, it’s also in the Bonneville program.

 

Point of wonder: see the missing fenderwell bead on the black primer body? But the bead is as original on all the light colored pics. Was the body replaced at one time? I really doubt anyone would weld some original wheelwells back into a race car after they were removed for some reason.

 

Yes, agreed, you could clearly see the yellow under the lacquer checked white.
I always wondered if it was the Moon Sedan as well, but could never verify it.
