This is going to be so much bigger than the wheel and tire change! I’m going to be busy but excited for the outcome!

 

Maybe the car is trying to tell you to leave it alone for a while and just enjoy it? Love the dog!

 

I’m pretty sure the car is loving what I’m doing to it! All the hacks are getting fixed and it’s going to finally be the solid roadworthy hot rod that I’ve always wanted it to be!

How much chop ?

 

While traveling to Southern California for the Bias Ply Drags (sadly as a spectator instead of a participant) I stopped off on the trip home and picked up this intake with 4 Stromberg 97s. The guy was one of the coolest hot rod/drag racers I’ve ever met! I had planned to swing by and grab the intake and get right back on the road. I showed up bright and early and was greeted with a smile and offered coffee, then his wife came out and made us breakfast. An hour later we were still sitting at the dining room table looking at his tablet and all the pictures of cars he’s built over the years. Finally I explained that I needed to get on the road because I had a really long drive home. He said we should go get the parts from the garage but I absolutely had to see his garage in the process. All I can say is WOW!!! This gentleman has a multi car garage/shop that is literally stacked with hot rods and race cars and so much memorabilia that I couldn’t begin to see it all! We spent another hour or two with me drooling all over his collection. I could have spent days going through his shop and checking everything out. Finally I decided it was time to go. I paid him for the intake and carried it to my car. We talked about several other parts and even a couple of the cars and he told me to stay in touch if I needed any other parts. He did tell me that he doesn’t usually give tours of his shop to random people because of safety. I guess he saw how much I’m involved in the hot rod scene and trusted me. For this reason I’m not going to mention his name or even where he lives. I want to respect his privacy. I’m loving the people I meet along the hot rod highway!

 

I’ve spent the last couple of days getting things ready for when the new chassis comes in. Fingers crossed that it is within the next couple of weeks. Some of the things I’ve been doing are getting all of the Hemi parts gathered together and ready for the machine shop to give it one final look and then onto the dyno for fine tuning and some numbers. The dyno shop guy has agreed to tune it with both of the intake setups that I have. We’re pretty sure that the dual quads are going to make more power but I really want to run the 4 deuces. My plan is to rune the deuces for daily driving and road trips, then swap over to the dual quads for serious race days. We’ll have to see how that works out.
I should get it back in early February and hopefully the chassis is ready for it to be installed by then. So much to do and so many parts to order!

I’m planning on a 5” chop but we’re going to set the body on the chassis, build the new floor and fit the seat. I’m 6’2” and have to fit in it. Without channeling it I think I can get away with 5” but we’ll see.

 

It seems like I haven’t updated this in a while. After a lot of back and forth I’ve decided on these valve covers for the Hemi.

 

After some discussion with friends I’ve decided to step it up and use a scatter shield instead of the stock style aluminum bell housing. With my plans to drive this car as well as race it occasionally I’d rather be on the safer side.

 

The machine shop came across a few little details that may not have been an issue, but with the amount of miles I put on my car every year they wanted things to be exactly right. These issues are adding a little time to the process but it is still in line for dyno time in the very near future.

 

This is the big one I’ve been waiting for! The chassis finally arrived! On Monday I’ll get started putting things together so I have a roller. Then it’s time to fab up the motor mounts and all the litttle things to mount the body.

It’s been a busy time but here are a few pictures of my progress so far.
The chassis is going together nicely. I’ve got motor mounts and transmission mount tacked in place. The body has been stripped and I’m pleasantly surprised at the condition it’s in. I thought for sure we were going to find a lot of rust and missing metal. It had plenty of bad bodywork but nothing too bad.

 

@Scrappy’s designs Did you happen to get all the fancy stitch cams with that sewing machine? I started out with a Kenmore like that. The cams that load into the door on top can make some pretty cool accent stitching.

 

I did not. I’ll have to look into those.

 

The body came back from media blasting and has a fresh coat of epoxy primer. Let the metalwork fun begin!

 

Scrappy, looking Great! The body is really Nice and that frame is definitely going to be a big plus when it comes time to drive that baby down the road.

 

Today I removed the scabby floor and firewall. It’s going to take some more cleaning up but the new floor will be so much nicer.

Not a lot has happened on the car itself. We’re waiting on a bunch of parts and kind of on hold until they get here. The machine shop has been busy with all of the imperfections they found while going through the Hemi. So far the worst one is the crank being 74 grams out of balance. They now have it within half a gram. They should start putting it back together next week. I’m really excited to hear it run on the dyno. While I’m waiting I took some of the aluminum parts and polished them, then painted between the fins in the new body color. This should help tie everything together. I also had the 1935 dashboard sandblasted so we can do some fabrication work and make it fit the car. I’m loving the look it has!

 

I can’t forget to add this one. My Dad has always loved this car and is really excited to see it when I’m done. I took him down to the shop and let him see it in progress. He can see my vision and loves everything about it. I still haven’t convinced him that it NEEDS the Hemi, but he gets it.

 

where did you get that carpet roll? does it have welting on the edge already?

 

Got the body stripped down and ready to set it on the new Brookville floor. Whoever built this car in the past did some really bad work on it. The welding on this thing is horrible! I’m so glad to be making it safe and solid again.

 

The floor assembly is going to take a little work to fit the new frame with the 5” drop in the rear. It won’t be a huge thing. I’m trying to keep the floor as flat as possible and to maintain as much usable trunk space as possible.
