  4. Does the flat spot near the bottom of the housing mean it's for 55-56 265 only? Different cam bearing design?

For most of us! Bet Mark is laughing, though.

  6. Supposed to be for oil to drain. Don’quote me.
From the experts here I should be good as long as I plug the small oil hole in the shaft.

  13. Anthony, I just finished getting caught back up with this thread, when I did Brenda's wagon I started out having no experience at all with sheet metal work, but I quickly realized you don't need thousands of dollars worth of equipment, a cheap bead roller that has been reinforced, an assortment of hand tools, tin snips, a sheet metal brake is hand but not completely necessary, a couple of pieces of angle iron can be very advantageous in bending the metal.

It's only sheet metal, if I screw it up, which I did every now and then I started over and learned from my mistakes, I ended up with 109 patch panels and it took me several years but with the help of a pal that knew a lot more than I did we accomplished the task.

All anyone needs is a sharpie, some poster board, tape and scissors and your ready to get started making patterns.

I am convinced that after doing it myself and seeing what you have done with minimal equipment anyone that wants to do these type of repairs can if they roll up their sleeves and try.

When I started the '54 Ford Ranch wagon no one was making replacement sheet metal and I was a complete novice, now EMS is making some parts and if a guy can afford them it can make the job easier, doing the work and making the parts carry's a certain amount of satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment.

Hopefully through your tutorials in this thread they will give fellow Hamber's the confidence to jump in with both feet.

BTW, I did all the work with a mig welder. HRP

  14. TIG/MIG/torch. Doesn’t matter when it’s all done. They all work. Basics for fitment and patterns are the same. All require some discipline and patience.
Messing up a part is just learning what not to do.
Even the pro shops scrap a mistake every now and then.
And I hope this thread encourages others to try new things

I just need to get my crap together and get back on this. It’s good enough now I can remove the chassis and tackle that.
School is in full swing, state inspections next week, me getting distracted with other stuff……mostly just lazy.

Yep, I appreciate all you are showing in this thread Anthony. I know I can get overwhelmed at times when it comes to rust repair. I am starting to plan what order to get started on my Merc and know I just need to start on the rust repair to get it solid enough to do the fun stuff like the chop, etc. I haven’t started looking yet to what all patch panels I need or are even available. But, this thread has encouraged me to just make whatever I need. Anyway, thanks for documenting it all. Thirty years ago, I would have already jumped in and been mostly done with the Merc. But, I seem to stay too busy or distracted now to work like I used to.

I am all too familiar with getting busy and distracted. I have learned a lot from Anthony's doings, and as soon as I get settled down in the new job, get the holidays out of the way, this and that, I will be back on my project. I WILL be using a lot of the techniques shown by Anthony for sure!

  17. Had an uninterrupted day to mess around in the shop.
Finished up the column and firewall.
Well, got it to a point I can start removing the chassis.

keeping the column shift on the 56 column. The recess was necessary.

Nice recess. Why did you have to do that?

Because of the rag joint. Lot of work to have it.

  20. The rag joint and CPP box. 3 inches was removed from the column.
Not necessary for an aftermarket column as far as I know.
The wife wants the shifter on the column.
So we modified it to work the the PS she wanted

Nice. The column shifter can work with a TH350, I'm told. The route I want to take on my '55. Decent aftermarket shifters aren't a hundred bucks anymore.

  22. Using an OD auto. An OD column detent is available. I’ll modify the column shift to move more. I’ve only tacked the shift mount to the arm incase I need to change the length. Might mock up an arm to check while the trans is there.

decided to handle the bottom of the fenders before I remove the chassis.

  25. Which one of you did this?
    IMG_6127.jpeg

  26. Not me but the guy that did that also worked on the fenders of my old model A pickup, he tried to fill in the spare tire well in the fender with Bondo. HRP
