  2. You obviously read the post I went back and deleted after looking at my own pics. There were a few cars that didn’t have the guards on them even though I obviously didn’t pay attention when running around taking pics. The one that stood out was the one with tread though. It was…uh…different… o_O Not a HAMB-friendly car but did have a blown Hemi in it.

I just guess I am so used to seeing cars without guards, I didn’t even notice that a few cars didn’t have them. That’s why I deleted my post saying they all had them…

  3. I know quite a few of the people there. The heavily chopped blue 33 highboy coupe owner retains his fenders, the guy with the white ARDUN powered coupe hates them and will run them on the highway, but removes them at an event like this. Puts them back on to drive home. Technically, it is illegal not to have them in every state but maybe because most of the fenderless cars were from across the border in QLD they figured the NSW cops would leave them alone. Speculating. Both are regulars at the coffee/breakfast get togethers I go to.

  4. While I haven't been to a US lowrider car show/event... based on my reading of lowrider event coverage, the family & friend atmosphere being a stronger element in Australian car show is what I've come to think lowrider culture is likely more about as well - even though I don't have first hand experience. Maybe that comparison fits?

Hi @guthriesmith , gotta say a huge thanks for sharing all the great pics and your trip with us. Yamba has been on my bucket list but I always find some excuse to not go. Well, if you can get yourself there from half way around the world, then I guess I have no more excuses. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your trip Down Under. I hope you go home with nothing but great memories.

  6. Not sure I can speak intelligently about how it would compare to a low rider event since I haven’t ever experienced that. But, the closest comparison I have is the custom car culture. @straykatkustoms puts on a couple of events that I try to attend that have a real similar feel. Maybe older rod runs in the states were this way? I never went to any of them either since I was into muscle cars and drag racing for the first several years I played with cars.

There are lots of imported cars in Australia however there are many differences from cars assembled here.

A '34 Ford has different body swages for example and '39 Ford Coupes have a different roof shape etc. I don't profess to be an expert in all these small differences but if you look closely you will spot them.

Generally (per capita) us Aussies love cars, trucks, bikes and having fun.

In late 2016 I visited New York and Massachusetts on a work trip similar to guthriesmith. I left feeling that almost every American (when they heard me speak) had a curiosity and interest in Australian culture and our country. Most questions started with our highly dangerous fauna.

Thanks for posting and I am glad that you found some fun

    Cheers Turns

and that is still one of my fondest memories. ENJOY !!

  11. Headed to the airport in Brisbane now going to Melbourne this afternoon. A HAMBer that I have several mutual friends with is planning to pick me up once I hit the hotel there. Trying to make the best of a business trip and meet as many Aussie HAMBers in person as I can.

  12. Thanks for the Yamba photos.
    Have a safe trip.

Never been to a car show in Oz, but that is true about the lowrider shows I have been to.

looks like fun. I was thinking about fenders with tire treads before I read it in a post.
I'm sure a person could get used to driving on the wrong side of the road and sitting in the passenger seat but I could never speed shift a 4 speed using my left hand. I am like EXTRA right handed, I could never juggle, play guitar or the piano or anything requiring the right and left hands to work in unison. how are the pedals arranged?

Backing up is odd looking over the wrong shoulder though.... Spent many summers driving mini's in Pommie land.

  25. Well, another amazing time this evening in Melbourne with a mate that I have known from here for years and also have several mutual friends with. Oggie came and picked me up from the hotel, took me for Mexican food, took me to his house so I could see the cars and bikes in his shed, then brought me back to the hotel in his y-block powered roadster. Couldn’t have asked for a better evening. Here are a few pics of Oggie’s hot rods and from the ride back to the hotel. Amazing hospitality and enjoyable evening.

  26. I meant to say that I got to ride in the coolest Uber in town this evening. :D

  27. Weird, riding shotgun in the left seat, and no steering wheel.
