After admiring these quirky cars my whole life, finally scored this beauty last week. It's a 39 Ford Deluxe, with what I believe to be 42,500 actual miles. The wood is all original maple from Henry Ford's forests in Upper Michigan, including some tiger maple. Still running the original 221 flathead and floor shifted 3 speed. Drives like a dream but a little anemic -- tops out at around 53-55 mph. Thinking of a mild hop up over the Winter. Anyone else out these hiding a Woodie? Let's see 'em!
Beautiful car. 55 sounds rather low. Too many floor mats under the gas pedal? Something is wrong, it should do much better even as a stocker. Dave
I have a friend that has been working on his for many years but is still a long way from completion. It's more of a "partial".
I've had a couple of these before (39 coupe and 40 sedan) but the 39 had a 3/4 race flathead and the 40 had a built Merc flathead with a blower. The Woodie might have a little more in it, but I didn't want to push it too hard. It felt comfortable at 53-ish mph. It's going to Millworks Hot Rods in New Hampshire this winter to put a little pep back in its step.
Always wanted a Woody but this Nebraska weather is a killer for woodies if used regularly. 46 is my favorite.
Sorry bout the double post here, but the 48 lives in Colorado at Carl’s house, flathead and all and the 40 shares a stall in So Cal with my 40 pu, “ol every day”.
Nice Woodie, now can I invite you to Join the National Woodie Club. I see that you are located in WI. Next August, 1-4 the National Woodie Club is having our national meet close to you at the Gilmore in Hickory Corners, MI. Hope you can make it.
This is in my garage, it’s won the Dearborn, AACA Grand Nationals, multitude of senior awards from both the V8 club and AACA and was used in the movie “Walk the Line “ for all of the interior scenes. It was the cover car for the National Woody Clubs newsletter/magazine, needless to say it was my dad’s pride and joy. It will be at Pebble Beach for the Concours de Elegance possibly next year if I get the letter back from them. Since it’s an invitation only event you have to submit the paperwork in November to see if you get the invite. It already had one invite from them but my mom passed away that year and dad and I stayed home. But it’s been sitting in the same spot for the last 11 to 12 years.
Congrats - maybe shop around for a two speed rearend. once you start on trying to get true power upgrades from motor one thing leads to another, and cost goes up.
Thanks...I just got my Columbia back from John Connely for a complete bullet proofing and the complete set of original controls from him. I just need to block out some time to install it all......
Here’s our 1932 model B in 1966 and today. Mostly original wood, 12,600 original miles. Old black paint from the 50’s
Here's the 38 La Salle hearse (woodie), just like this one, I drove to high school in the late 50's . Bought it from Rollies Auto wrecking for $400 It had carved wood curtains on the sides so it's a woodie too. We use to put Beer and Wine in the tire well with some ice and be ready to party.
Took out '49 down to the beach for the 2024 Drive Your Woodie Day. Too cold for swimming in New Zealand though.
