I have a few small pieces of 1/2 x 1/2" sheet metal angle, in the shop. Don't know where or when I got them. But I would like to buy more, and maybe in 3/4" and 1". 16 or 18 gauge. I can only find 1/8" on all the websites. Anyone got a source? Yes, I know I can bend some up on my brake, but it doesn't produce the crisp edge I need for some jobs!
Metal shelving and filing cabinets are one source, but you get what you get when it comes to flange widths, etc. I haven't seen "off the shelf" pieces of pre-bent 16 0r 18 gauge sheetmetal sold anywhere, but maybe a local fabricator could bend some up to your specs.
Galvanized. https://tamarackmaterials.com/product/100A-43-10 Commercial Construction uses alot of 18 ga angles and shapes. Might be somewhere to dig into.
Hardware suppliers or farm stores. A couple of mine have odd small gauge shit. Can't raise a rt hand to what but I've done it weekends and after hours
I needed bigger angle than that, something like 1 1/2" or bigger, in 16 gauge, and I couldn't find it either. So I bought thinwall square box and cut it into angle. Only way I could get what I wanted.
Why, When and Where. I need photos! You guys know what you are discussing, yet I do not know? ? ? ? Sheet Metal Angle, I will inter web it, with image selected feature. A little later in search time ......... Now I need to buy a goniometer, to create my own custom Sheet Metal Angles.
This company is great to deal with and the prices are better than most https://www.coremarkmetals.com/12ga-pickled-oiled-formed-angles .
Go to your local steel or welding shop. Mine has a complete shop and will fab up angle cheap. A lot of Guys forget that steel or weld shops do that. Pleasanton steel is my go to place for steel and will cut from a foot on up. A lot of times he will sell me drops cheap
I know some of you will scoff at this source, but old bed frames are a good source of steel angles in a variety of widths & thicknesses! I keep an eye out on trash day, at recycling places, & just laying out where people do illegal dumping. It's been a source of raw material for a lot of projects over the years!
A local place that I go to sell "drops" by the pound. They put the short pieces on a rack off where their chop saw is and most of us who go there look through that rack when we just need a short piece. The junk metal yard across town sorts out the good pieces that they haul in from the fab shops that they collect metal from around town.
I use the crap out of bed frames! My mini mill table is all bed frames, so is alot of my shrinker/stretcher stand. I probably have 10 to 12 sets in the corner of my shop. It's high carbon content so it's tough to drill and welding it can be different. .
We had a substantial sheet metal fab and assembly shop at work until around 1995. These guys were artists and would adjust the back-gauge on a brake until they got what they wanted. We had a complex electronic assembly that had a series of 3 trays that fit into it, called slices. They made it 100% in-house. Tolerances like +/- .010" were held to .002". On a spares job, we had some outside houses give it a go... it would not fit together once we got the sub-assemblies back.
