My 327 has a 1966 block and balancer- it's the old 6 3/4-in balancer that is about half as thick as a modern balancer. The timing tab on the original engine was welded to the timing cover - as the timing cover was trashed, I replaced it.
The one in the photo below, which is a stock GM unit, completely covers the timing mark on the balancer
I can't find a bolt on timing tab that will work with that balancer type in. Does anybody know of one, part number?

You could cut and weld that one to fit.

Keep in mind the bolt on timing tabs (in general 69/later) were originally paired with a damper that is keyed roughly eight degrees off the early damper which has an inline timing line and keyway.

That's great, but my balancer is 6 3/4" and not as thick as an 8"

...and that's part of the problem.
I'm going to use a piston stop and determine the actual timing mark.

  11. Drill a hole at 4 degrees (or wherever you set your timing) so you can see the timing mark. Could be a bit tricky shining the timing light through the hole, depends on how close it is to the edge of the balancer.

IMG_0250.jpeg I make a pointer from a piece of welding wire and point it at TDC and use timing tape on the balancer if it’s not a 360* marked one. I paint the end white. I also do it on ***embly when I determine TDC…not a SBC but you get the idea..
