Got this on the cover of the latest Hot Rod magazine.

so...are they going to turn into....what?

    It's all kind of confusing.

(edit: JohnLewis provided this link to a FAQ about the change, thanks)

probably a strategy to offset the increasing cost of shipping periodicals.

I gave up and on magazines when ad’s no longer supported carbureted engines and 15” wheels and tires.

The beginning of the end. It was a great 75 years but it’s time has passed. And don’t flame me, I have major tonnage of old magazines in my basement that I often refer to. It’s just that the world has moved on.

For the last 15 years, I have taken about 1000 car mags (Hot Rod, CarCraft, Street Rodder and a number of others) to the Portland Swap Meet every year. They were priced at or below $0.10 each. We would take most of them back home. I didn’t want to throw them away, but it has seemed like there isn’t much interest in them anymore. I’ll keep taking them to Portland in the future.
The world has changed, but I still like a magazine to look at.

  10. I received mine today, not happy about the change....

  11. So I suspect that the cost of an annual subscription will now only net you 4 issues instead of 12. That triples the cost per issue, assuming the annual subscription price stays the same. Which it probably won't. Be interesting to see if they can pull this off.

I just got mine today, and it is dated 01/24. So will that be the last of them in this format? I don't mind the change so much, but I do like them monthly. I hope the new and improved version isn't in another "size" meaning like the current run of oh-so-special magazines are. Sure hope it's the same size as it is now, just thicker. And please no flat finish covers!

4 bigger issues per year, but more expensive. It's still way cheaper than Sick The Mag ($33 USD/quarter). Theirs are double issues, though. There's something about a physical paper magazine where I remember the content I read versus reading the same online.

HRM only has a tiny amount of staff now. The Speed Week coverage was light, but alright.

I guess this is not a bad proposed format but all I was hoping for was a change in their current Font size to something I could read without eye fatigue within 5-10 minutes!

Thanks for info/link. subscriber but, had not seen this yet. when somone claims item will be a collector means that it won't be because will be a common item.

In the latest HRMagazine, the distribution tally is printed. Copies printed in highest month in last year is something like 333K but month closest of current issue saw about 285K printed (both numbers from memory). Almost 15% drop. Maybe they can pull it off but my guess is that it isnt for my benefit.

''I wonder if it could possibly be a rodders journal quality book?''
I don't believe that would be possible ....

  21. Yep, if they don't increase the font size, I definitely won't be signing up for the quarterly when my subscription is up.

Who takes their lap top or phone in to the throne?? Not me, I still like a magazine to look at. I am at the end of my current subscription, which was about 3 years long because the other Magazines I used to subscribe to were stopped and rolled into Hot Rod. Well I will see if I like it... Times have changed.. too bad...

Haven't gotten this yet. Seems like a typical pay more, get less situation.

As usual, it will likely be cheaper to sign a family member up for a "new" subscription than to renew your current subscription. A fine way to reward loyal readers.

to all the naysayers, this could be a very good thing. Their content lately has been very good, I am all for a higher quality magazine that has even more of it! bring it on!

I saw this too and am not terribly concerned about it. Those who complain about how "thin" the magazine is now should be happy about this - more content per issue! ;):)
The part I like is the added bonus of a year's subscription to MotorTrend Plus streaming for current subscribers. I've had MotorTrend Plus in the past and in spite of your views on the physical print version, there's lots of very good content within their online realm. Well worth it.
I've adapted to change in the past and will do it this time too. If we want to keep any of this type of content available, in any form, we have to support it.

Quarterly is not uncommon. Lots of specialized topics (paint/body, engines, interchanges, etc.) used to be printed quarterly and were actually much better than the monthly rag. I have several which i keep and can still reference if need be-the info in them fits perfect for the old rods of today. I do hate that the mags have disappeared though, that used to be a big deal to get the latest issue.

My subscription ran out a few years back but I wasn’t reading what was showing up anyhow. I have no interest in FI, LSs, Gen3s or Coyotes , it’s bad enough that you have to spend a grand for a top notch Holley or a set of headers now days that are used in the magazine.
I have to admit I’m still working with parts I bought twenty to forty years ago.

My thoughts also, I am hoping that more of the Hot Rod Deluxe content will be added.
