So the car is painted before you verified that the engine you want to run will fit without surgery? I'm going with "that is unlikely".
Well, I have no real clue. But they are not very long. I put a 330 DeSoto in my 41 ford PU, it fit with no firewall or floor surgery, with a stock size radiator and mechanical fan. I did use a short SBC water pump from Hot Heads. I am thinking that my truck had a flathead originally, so maybe they are close to the same length? The right valve cover is exactly a 8mm spark plug wire distance from the firewall. It is basically wall-to-wall engine.
I think it seems feasible if you are putting the motor and steering in together/ with each other. If you have to place the motor based on existing steering or have to run steering to work around the motor your going to come into less options for placement and clearing your stock firewall
I really like that the chart posted by @nochop includes the numbers for an Allison. You know; just in case.
Agreed! I need to stick this on the wall of the shop for bench racing purposes if nothing else. @nochop any comments as to the accuracy of the dimensions on this document?
For those of us who don't happen to have a 291 DeSoto laying around for reference, maybe you could add your dimensions to the chart? Who knows, there might be one lurking around the corner. BTW, that's a pretty handy chart, @nochop. Thanks.
Yep I screenshot the chart and will be blowing it up so I can have it in the garage, Thanks @nochop!!!!!
A 276 fit like a glove in my '29, BUT... It's on a '32 frame, so there's a bit more room between the (stock steel) firewall and radiator. The notch in the firewall looks like it was made to snuggle around the distributor.
That chart is in carnut.com Most of the baby hemis are roughly sbc length wise. If I get a minute today I’ll google around and find you a confirmed length
