    Hello,

I made a change in the posted photo. It was such a beautifully constructed 40 Willys Coupe that the fade did not do it justice. The time spent visiting/helping our close friend, Atts Ono carefully construct his immaculate Willys Coupe and all of his meticulous machining was eye opening. It was like a giant Christmas present being built right before our presence. It was red to match, too.

The only action film of our close friend, Atts Ono’s immaculate 1940 Willys Coupe was taken by me in 1964 on the day of the debut at Lion’s Dragstrip. It was a PHR cover car several years later and showcased the totally hand built custom machined parts. Check out the photos in the magazine. It was sold in 1971 and was shipped to “somewhere in the Midwest…” according to his brother. Where? At the time everyone was reeling with sadness and since that time, papers and things got lost in the time zones.

I was invited to the All Gas Coupe/Sedan drag race at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1964. Luckily, I filmed as much as I could, since it is the only action film from that day. There were a ton of photographers taking various shots from inside of the fence, but not one has popped up since in any publications or a You Tube channel.

To highlight some history on Atts Ono I remember one time period of him making choices to guide him to hot rods and drag racing.

    Note:

Since I was more into sports, basketball/football/baseball/tennis were the things I liked to do. I met Atts Ono on a basketball team. When I found out that he knew my brother and were friends, that sealed the deal. His skills on the court were amazing. I was taller and I played center at 5’ 8” Ha, a center at 5’8”… I was barely taller than everyone else, but height and being able to go to the basket was a skill I enjoyed. He was the smaller, point guard and we all knew why he was being courted by those high school/college coaches.

We all knew Atts Ono had skills and several times, the high school coaches came to our practices/games and wanted to have him play on their championship teams. But, they were always put off due to Atts Ono’s other skills, being an expert mechanical person, a creative genius and skilled machinist. From an early age, he was making stuff on his own. When he got a job as a machinist, the skills jumped up several notches. So, his future basketball career in high school was history, let alone Division One colleges.

Being several inches taller and a good shooter, I thought I had a career in high school basketball. But, when the guy guarding me in high school was 6 feet 4 inches and could dunk a basketball as a sophomore, I knew my future was not basketball.

We worked on his build after he helped us build our 1940 Willys 671 SBC C/Gas Coupe. He was gone too soon and the red Willys Coupe is/was on a moving van headed to the Midwest was the last Atts Ono experience and memory. Thanks, Atts…
