Check out my other threads regarding this truck. I still haven’t been able to find any pictures of this pickup when it was running so the question of the day is under cab headers, lake pipes or cowl exit collector headers? What do you think he ran? What would be period for the late 50’s running a 324 olds?

Need to order materials asap so I can start the motor but can’t decide what to build.

it was a drag truck that I’ll be putting back on the street to drive.

  2. Having done several different versions with several different motor/chassis of this over 40+ years it would serve you well for the Race/Street combination. Turn the last elbow about 90 degrees and bring it out behind the tire with a removable cap on it and tie into the first bend down and connect to the full under chassis exhaust system.

Here’s what the “Lakes” style will look like. My truck is very similar to yours but nailhead powered (for now).
    It’s all parts from Speedway.

If I wanted it to feel mid to late 50’s I’d run some Belond style headers and scavengers out the back.

If I wanted it to feel like 1998 I’d do the lakes style headers and maybe sneak a run threw the apron like the headers show above and out the back.

I could see the truck going either way. I’m a sucker for the late 90’s shifters/ choppers cars so it would be a tough call for me. I guess you’ve got to ask what era you want the truck to “feel”

I agree with your first paragraph. A Belond style tubing manifold would fit the 50s style well. But I take exception to the second paragraph that Lakes headers are 1998. They did see a resurgence in the 80s and 90s due to the availability of kits but they were a 60s style that was popular with those who could afford them. Some didn’t have access to the rolled cones and opted for a different style, like the 313 pickup in Swade41’s post.

  6. I built these by request for a good friend of mine. It was a lot of fun to drive but even with the turn outs, by far the most annoying thing I was ever in, period! First 5 miles not to bad but after that something else needed to be done.

I’m liking the Belond idea but finding an original set doesn’t happen often. I could make some look alikes pretty easily.

If I went with the lake style I have a 36 driveline I could use to at least make it period.

I wasn’t intending that lakes headers were a 90’s thing I’m saying on that specific truck it would give that vibe.

That was such a wonderful image that I clicked something that I might have shouldn't. Truely stunning. Sorry.
