Technical What are you working on?

  1. A man can not have to many dollies, I took advantage of the HF sale and bought 4 metal ones, they have a bigger diameter wheel than the furniture dollies I've been using. Yesterday that 57 was feeling awfully heavy on the furniture dollies, so these have to roll easier.
Speaking of rolling easy, after I assembled all 4 I had put them in front of my Henry J,

    20231127_141416.jpg

later on I decided to move them out in the other half of the garage to use under the 41.
Of course the first thing in my brain is to stand on two like roller skates (something I never got the hang of) and work my way around the J to the man door. All was going good until it wasn't, the casters can go any direction they want and they wanted to do the splits ! Lol
Damn near pulled my groin, I got off that horse real quick like lol

    what did you learn? lol

  5. Well since I didn't really hurt myself the learning curve was pretty flat, today I only used one foot at a time to get them over to the 41 LOL

I usually push them hard with my foot knocking something over or breaking something I should have put away a while back. They never go the direction I want them to. lol

I have the water pump changed on my truck, its got most of the antifreeze back in it, but I didn't get it finished up tonight. I've decided that this was a good time to reengineer my radiator overflow system, so that is in progress. What I thought was going to be simple and work has not turned out that way.
I pulled the hood off by myself this morning, but I'm not going to put it back on myself, so I will have to recruit my son to give me a hand with that. Might be Friday before the hood gets back on.

The actual water pump change was just over 2 hours, I'm 8 hours and a trip to the auto parts store into it right now. There will probably another trip to the auto parts store before I get the coolant recovery system back operational.

I keep telling myself that "I'm having fun now!"

IMG_1140.jpeg Replaced front drums with discs and added a steering damper, drives and stops much better now.

  10. Put some material on the bottom of my bolt on scoop to try and save the paint on the hood.
This weather is not looking good for my short test drive and the big jockeying of all 4 cars around, snow on the ground now and rain the next 5 days then back to snow ... ugh

  11. Warmed up and started melting snow and the roads were pretty much dry so after my mid day pulmonary function test for the year I had enough time to lend a friend a hand.
He's been wanting to get his chassis out of subterranean storage since he has the body pretty much done, he's fighting the big C and unfortunately it's taking a toll on him. He has a friend that has a smaller trailer that helped him to swap body and chassis in and out of storage but the friend had a stroke, but he still wanted to help get the chassis.
My friend has been patiently waiting but between weather and his friend's rehab from the stroke the days just been rolling by.
I told him I would help the next time the weather broke but my trailer won't fit through the entrance of the underground M-F, 9-5, storage facility, so we would have to pull the chassis out with his truck, then load it on my trailer to get it back to his place.
I got back home from the doc's about 1:30, nice day, so I gave him a shout and ask if he felt like going and getting his chassis, an excited hell yeah set the plan in motion.
His brother came along to help so I got the trailer and tie downs ready while they went under and dragged the chassis up and out.

After a few minutes they started to emerge

    20231130_150622.jpg 20231130_150624.jpg 20231130_150627.jpg

At this point I decided to quit taking photos and go help steer since it looked like he was struggling to steer the tires.

    20231130_150658.jpg

    Got it there and loaded

    20231130_150837.jpg 20231130_151647.jpg

And safely back to his house next to the model A, going fenderless, munci 4 spd and 3.73 geared 57 chevy rear end

    20231130_155331.jpg

The engine is the 355 out of my t-bucket that I gave him to help get the car on the road, a really great runner that should make his coupe pretty fun to drive.
It was pretty fun for me anyhow

Replaced the tub shower combo last year with a walk in shower to make it easier for my wife who wears leg braces. No beer cans but did find an old rat nest from long ago.

Found a couple half empty cans of Ranch Style Chile Con Carne in the fresh air intake on a 70's era Fox & Jacobs house remodel once.

His previous car was a 60's style 56 chevy, 427 - 425hp clone, that he also raced at the local nostalgia events.
When he bought this car it was actually a 4x4 with jeep axles under it lol

Putting a '63 Rambler gauge panel in my low cab truck project, because it's about the same shape (& size!) of the back window. Bent & welded on some1/4" round rod for the opening. 1st coat of primer. Laying out switches, etc. 36dash.jpg

  19. So it’s actually a pretty old lift made by PMW (precision metal works) who I do believe are still around but not making lifts any longer. The lift was made in 89, I found it in a pole barn in a crate that was still sealed from the factory, it’d never been opened. The previous owner told me his uncle bought for him to do exhaust work but he never got around to putting it up. So I bought it from him and have had it for about 5 years. It’s a decent lift, completely stock. Your right the feet are different from most of todays lifts, I’m unsure of any type of advantage that it provides but I’m sure they had some engineer that felt they were warranted.

I'm happy to report the water pump and the coolant recovery system modification has been successfully completed, and the truck is back on the road.

A minor leak at the one rear axle seal (I'll do both while it is apart, darned "C" clipped axles) and the minor leak at the pinion seal, and the dripping trans output shaft seal, while its all apart, are the next project. I'm not in a big hurry to do that, at this point the drips are more of an irritation then a problem.

My buddy (that painted the truck) tells me he would replace all 4 seals for around $100 labor (I have the parts), if I'm willing to wait until he gets caught up on some stuff. Not having to lay on my back, under the truck, during the winter (or any other time) to do that, is sounding pretty good to this fat old man.

We were torn between the zip ties or the cardboard on the plug wire holders. :D

  25. The weather finally cooperated this afternoon to get my cars swapped around, took 4 hrs and just started sprinkling again when I was finishing up.

It's a BBM tunnel wedge top end.

  30. A friend finished up my plates for the 57 pickup, turned out nice

My friend I helped with the model A, a few posts up, gave these to me last year or possibly the year before (CRS), ironically 34 was my old football # and the 66 is the year I was hatched.
