40 years together, that's an admirable milestone indeed!
So cool that you both can enjoy each other and still have fun with cool older cars as well.
Be safe out there, congratulations on your anniversary !

I had that pattern once. Input chattering in pilot bearing. New pilot bearing took care of it. IMG_2346.jpeg

the rt is horrible! they ran sportsman tree at Irwindale, which I wasn't expecting so I redlighted, then they ran pro tree at Vegas, which I wasn't expecting so I spent a second sitting there staring at the green light.

Got a pilot bushing too late to have the time to install it. But did spend some more more time looking at the distributor, and checking dwell and timing. The advance mechanism is wonky, it sticks at full advance, so I have the timing set up pretty far, and it's causing it to buck at low rpm. Not sure what I can do about it right now, except back off the timing so it's retarded at speed. Which is probably the best compromise.

Anyways, we went with my friend to his aunt's 70th birthday party, and had a great time. They were even taking polaroid type pictures of all the guests. I've known their family for a long long time, it was fun.

And I gave Janet her 40th anniversary card and Lego gift this morning.

I've been dealing with, or trying to deal with, the faulty grounds of the 6 taillights on my '62 Impala. I've cleaned the mounting sites, the buckets, ran separate grounds, etc. They'll all work in the driveway, then the ones in the trunk on one side or the other will not come on, or do the weird "no ground" thing with the rest of them. They dim, they won't light, the turn signals won't work, or will, depending. It's aggravating, especially with the poor attention spans of drivers doing their make-up, texting, or driving stoned. Lastly, the indicator switch under the wheel called it quits. I've got some work to do when we get home...

  21. Had to do the same on my old '64 panel truck, brass center to aluminum housing.

I wonder if this is one of those situations where it helps to run a separate ground strap from the inside of the deck lid to somewhere inside the trunk compartment. This can usually be done around the trunk hinge area so the ground strap doesn't get in the way of things.

Attach one end to the inner reinforcement under the deck lid and the other someplace under the parcel shelf. A simple braided ground strap should provide enough flexibility when opening and closing the trunk.

Back to the car today... I bought a new Chinese point distributor, and installed it when we got to Pomona. Timing looks better, runs better. No tach. Made a pass, ran good.

I had a weird advance deal on a tach drive dist once. It would work fine as long as the distributor was loose. as soon as I tightened up the hold down clamp it would stick. I put 2 gaskets on it and it was fine. I am not sure if it was an incorrectly machined manifold (aftermarket) or if the gear on the bottom was not shimmed correctly

That's what I'm thinking. Poor grounds can be really frustrating to chase. My '64 Riviera had the drivers door power window quit. All the others worked, this one had, then nothing. Tracing it, the switch was powered, both from the drivers door side and it's own switch was juiced, power to the motor, but nothing. Turnout to be poor ground between the door, the hinges and the body. The bolts were corroded in the cage nuts and between them and the hinges. There was a GM service bulletin on it from the time, adding a ground strap was the "fix", and what I did. Worked fine after that.

For you guys chasing bad grounds, may I suggest making a few test leads with alligator clips. Try grounding the suspect part and any others (all 4 corner signal bulb sockets) before cutting and splicing wires. The nice innocent wiring you save will thank you!

Most of the stuff there is from another guys' truck, who went to get in staging lanes for racing. Not my stuff.
