Strange but I'd paint that bugger back the original colors, put proper white walls and Bel-Air hubcaps on it and show up at a rod trot just like I was wheeling an original stocker.

I was thinking that, then move the roof back and reposition the rear end back as well...you could also lose the conti and bring the trunk back...then it would rival it's Caddy cousins...

...Or just clean it up and appreciate it for what it is...

I think it’s perfect, just repaint the colors!

It surely could have had mods as what we're seeing itself was quite an undertaking...

It strikes me kinda funny that they extended the quarters for a continental kit and left the entire rest of the car bone stock with every single piece of factory ornamentation intact......

never a big fan of the connie kit, which it seems like was mandatory on a east coast custom. 3-4 inch quarter extension would be enough to catch the eye

  9. I get plenty.
But my biggest vice is looking for parts.
Either on my phone or digging thru scrap yards. Sometime just stopping at the gas station you get the “I know where …..is”
Sometimes odd things pop up while looking for junk.

  10. You are a hero.

  11. thinking aloud... Weren't the '58 Impala quarter panels longer than the non-Impala '58 quarter panels? By about 8" or so? Do you think it's possible that was part of the motivation for this styling exercise?

  12. I have to go have a look at something incredibly exciting for a guy like me this week. A random guy reached out to me on Christmas Eve. It’s all about talking to people.

The issue isn't necessarily the length of the quarters, it's that the deck lid is short. If the entire back of the car was longer, it would be significantly better, not just long quarters and a moulded continental kit.
Personally, I think tri-5 Chevys look short in the rear from the factory, so this sort of addresses that. The long rear I think really helps the overall proportions of the car, think an Olds 98 versus and 88. The extra length is all in the back, with none extra forward of the firewall.

But this current iteration with all shaft and no balls isn't up to snuff. Elongate the decklid to match the quarters, maybe even chop the top, and you've got a winner.

  14. I’d drive that thing just like it is.
Maybe shave the fat out of the top ….eventually.

  15. It has no flow overall, reminds me of the mopar turret top cars

  16. Yep. Never cared for the massive hood decoration.
That’s the one piece I told my wife I have to remove from her 56

OK but the extended filler neck probably added 3 gallons of fuel capacity to the tank! So, you know, there is that.

  18. Well, ya could extend the rear section kinda like this Ford with a Pocho tail and rework the deck lid in similar fashion

Im ok with the car, Id finish it up & rework some things. The price though...Am I out of line thinking thats a 7-8k car tops $ or am I that far off ? All due respect to the owner..
Edit: I missed the post w the runs & drives, Id guess a stock 56 Hardtop would be 12-15k or more if its not a rust bucket.
Im not sure if the custom work hurts or helps the value. Anyways cool car, hope it see's a new life.

Get rid of the Continental kit, put the tail light's back where they belong, repaint and drive. J.M.O.

  21. Then it’s just another boring stocker.

    yawn

  22. Floor looks good in the pics.
Belair prices are like most cars, high.
I’m sure the custom works hurts it some but the original tail light area is still there. I guess they just grafted another section of Qtr to it.
But why would anyone want a stock car?

  24. Car is almost perfect now.
Just get the fat above the drip rail gone.

  25. Maybe its a Oregon thing. Ive been watching this car for awhile on marketplace, but its the second 50s gm car I have seen where it has one pretty major modification and nothing else. There was a 57 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in Portland where the original owner took the car off the showroom down a body shop and had the tail fins cut off the car and welded smooth and had nothing else done to it.
