Chicago Police Dept. matrons, they were only assigned to special cases. It wasn’t until 1974 that they wore uniforms like their male counterparts and performed regular patrol duties.
Shown photo taken from the tall bluffs on inland side of PCH. Hello, The Balboa Bay Club has been pretty exclusive for many years. Access was by membership only. Then It went through many different owners and now is a resort hotel with access to the general public. There is still a private club portion for Bay Club members only. During the early days of outboard motors, a small rental boat and fishing in the bay, our dad used to take the whole family for an full day trip to Newport Bay. He took his outboard motor and rented a small boat for all of us to sit and fish in several spots near the first bridge and around the bend from the Balboa Bay Club. We caught fish in both places. In the main channel, not so much luck, but the smaller channels, that are/were less traveled had more fish. Our mom opted out after one trip, so the brothers and my dad ventured out several more times in the other smaller channels in the big harbor. I got to drive the boat with the outboard motor putt-putting along the quiet bay channels. It was a fun adventure for us little kids. Jnaki During our odyssey of boat slips for our sailing adventures, we did stay at a dock in the North end of the Newport Bay several times. (Lido Isle end) During these excursions, we liked the vastness of the Newport Harbor and its amenities all over the area. The waters were calm and the wind was good for sailing up and down the main channel. We even had an offer to dock our boat in a private slip on the Balboa Bay side that was reasonable for the time. Access was not public, but through a private gate. It was not in front of the actual club as those are for “HUGE” powerboats. But, the activities would have centered us in California and we had already gone up and down the current So Cal coastline many times. So, we looked elsewhere for different adventures on a larger scale. The San Diego Harbor provided us with experience from the original purchase and we had to move back closer to my wife’s aging mom + dad at the time. So, sailing around the San Diego harbor came to a halt for several years. Then the search for a closer docking place was a necessity. The Newport Harbor is a good place to sail and a nice place to enjoy a protected harbor for boating activities. Back 25 years ago, my wife and I sailed on a 14 foot sailboat in a college class about sailing techniques. We went all over the whole Newport Bay during our 3 consecutive weeks of sailing, everyday. We even challenged the swells out in the main opening channel to the ocean, while a big Southern Hemisphere swell was running across the channel opening to the ocean. That was a little shaky in the 14 foot Lido sailboat. But, we learned to adjust how to sail in big swells and opposing currents… But, the point was when we raced the rest of the class in front of the Balboa Bay Club (long channel) from one end of the harbor to the other in the Lido 14 sailboats. In very little wind, some wind to go a little faster and a strong wind that made us heel over and drop part sails to move along, were the different conditions. We learned enough to feel good about having our own sailboat for our next adventures. We started out with new 25 foot boat, then a 32 foot, a different type of racing sailboat at 26 feet and finally the best one at 31 feet for our 20 plus years of sailing in So Cal, the vast ocean and different harbors.
