Here is your Christmas update. Last we checked in, the car was still Flintstone floorboard.

    cad3412-25-1.jpg

No in progress pics, but how exciting are floorboards anyway?

    cad3412-25-2.jpg

Once a project has floorboards, I consider it a whole car. Yea, a whole car!

    cad3412-25-3.jpg

Plucked a bench seat from a Chevvie S10. Not sure if it was a murder scene or anything, but it was gross.

    cad3412-25-4.jpg

Narrowed about 6 inches. Measure once, cut twice and you will get to add an inch and a quarter back to it.

    cad3412-25-5.jpg

Cut down the foam and the rest is up to the upholstery guy.

    cad3412-25-6.jpg

The trunk lid hinge mount area was swollen with rust, so it had to go.

    cad3412-25-8.jpg

Made a new channel and welded the hinge plate to the backside.

    cad3412-25-9.jpg

Tack the trunk in place and make the hinge stuff fit around it. The bottom panel was a bit too tall, so it got cut off.

    cad3412-25-10.jpg

Holy shit, it fits. Trimmed 3/16 off the top of the taillight panel.

    cad3412-25-11.jpg

Here is the mostly finished product.

    cad3412-25-12.jpg

    See you next time.

Major progress. Whenever I get stuck on something anymore, I ask myself : "What would Abone do?"

  9. Loving this build, I like the way you have mounted the ladder bar brackets high up on the diff housings so the bars don’t hang low at the rear.

Love watching this one go together. Mine won't be this cool, but it's headed down the same road.

First update of the new year. Might have this pile done in '24. Maybe not...

DON'T LOOK at the late model alternator. Pretty much fell right in there. Made sure the radiator hoses clear the belt.

    cad341-1-1.jpg

Mounted the radiator and grille. Hey, it almost looks like a car.

    cad341-1-2.jpg

Back in the day, some dick head booger welded the cowl vent shut. I melted off the lead and gave it some primer a few months ago and it waited patiently to be fixed.

    cad341-1-3.jpg

The offending party welded the lid to the structure, so it all had to go.

    cad341-1-5.jpg

Some time ago, I bought this repair section from a kind HAMBer, whose identity is lost to my short-term memory.

    cad341-1-4.jpg

    Fits right in there.

    cad341-1-6.jpg

    Flipper upper stuff all works.

    cad341-1-7.jpg

Now for the dreaded 4 piece hood installation. Love an OG hod, but they are a pain in the balls to install. My good buddy @lo c dan up in Lexington jammed the top full of louvers. He did a fantastic job and is a super cool fella. He might even do some for you if you ask him real nice.

    cad341-1-8.jpg

Dan does great work, his louvers are straight and everything.

    cad341-1-9.jpg

And to my surprise, the hood pretty much fits.

    cad341-1-10.jpg

Now is the time where I figure out what to do with the top. It is horribly done, but the proportions are not terrible. The window openings on the doors run up hill, and it is only about a 2.75 inch chop. My first thought is take another inch out of it and fix all the shitty work in the process, but I'm kind of on the fence about the extra inch. What do YOU think??

As you pointed out, the proportion aren't bad....whats it gonna take to clean up the current chop?
If its a total redo, maybe take a hair more out of it.....but if you can clean it up and be happy with it, just go with it.....I got a feeling your gonna take more out of it, yeah just go for it, you'll wish you did later.

It looks a good height now...so me thinks just do what it needs to get it where you say perfect...huge job for a 1/2" here and there but if you don't you'll be forever focusing on it's shortcoming...the welded cowl vent might have been the cat's meow back in its heyday...I can see the guy beaming with his latest Rodding and Restyling how to mod...:D

I like the chop close to where it is, I'm not a fan of too severe of a chop. Now you just have to decide how to fix what is not done well by PO!

  20. I too like the height the roof is now, I would vote for fixing what ya got but it’s probably way less work to cut more out…

Oh and good work on the flipper upper thingy, I loves me a cowl vent.

I cut 3 1/2" out of mine and really like the proportions. Definitely chopped but not so much you can't see out of it.

Looking again maybe its just a rechop of the door itself...it looks too tight at the top fwd corner...or too short at the back...having a look around I see the imperfections in the chop that are probably bugging you...they aren't the easiest to pull off, I'm well aware of that...it ain't an Abone that's for sure...

You are right, the front of the door tops are way tall. The dude chopped the car with nails for hinge pins. The doors didn't fit in the hole when he started the chop, which most likely explains why the door tops run up hill. The front of the door tops need almost a 1/2 more off to fit right. Might start with that and see what happens.

If it was anyone else I’d say just make the front the front come down so the windows don’t run uphill but it’s you.

are you really gonna be ok with a car that doesn’t look angry?

If I were doing it, I would do as you suggested and take a little more out to clean up the chop. The running uphill deal would drive me nuts and it is likely easier to fix it all by taking another 3/4”-1” out to get the flow better than to mess with it as is just trying to straighten it out.
