Apparently it is legal in Iowa to run 1951 plates on the Styleline as the registered license plate for the car. Thas is, if I can find a matching pair of plates that are legible. Do other states now allow running the vintage plates on street legal vehicles? Or do you have to run antique or historical plates? I think it would neat to run the old plates. So if anyone has a set laying around, please let me know.
Year Of Manufacture ( YOM ) plates, its pretty common. I have '37 plates on my '37 truck here in Missouri.

Ebay of swap meet is your best bet. In Virginia, we can check to see if specific letter/number combinations are available on the DMV website. It might be worthwhile to do the same before purchasing any for your car.
In Tennessee, I registered my 57 truck as an antique, got the antique tag. Then I bought a 57 Tennessee tag and run that tag and carry the antique tag in the cab.
In Washington State... you can run YOM license plates.. only need one... cars are requiresd to be 30 years and older to do so.
Here in PA, with only a rear plate required, I run YOM plates (unregistered) on my '31 and OT '65. No issues yet after 20 years. But, legal plates where they count.
Finding a junker with a pair of usable plates would be incredibly lucky. Better to just use Ebay or one of the collectors who sells.
It's been allowed in GA for a while now. But you still have to purchase a regular tag and keep it somewhere in the vehicle, I keep it in the trunk. You have to take the YOM tag to the DMV so they can associate it. the collectors in your state are probably the best place to get the plates you want. I know a couple guys in Tucson who do AZ plates.
the chances of finding a car in a salvage yard that was junked in 1951.... even if ya did those plates would be toast from 70 years in the sun...
I believe in North Carolina you carry the normal plate registration in the car and just attach the YOM plate.
Same here in Ohio, purchase a Historical Registration and plate, then purchase YOM plates and take a picture or carry them into the DMV and they will register them to your vehicle. You have to carry the Historical registration and tags somewhere in the vehicle and you can run the YOM plates. Usually at the larger swap meets and shows you can find vendors selling old tags for your state and year. Joe
I'm a 32 Ford guy. Nebraska's counties are numbered. I am lucky to live in 32 county. I've been able to snag 1932- 32 county plates for all my cars. Also a 32 county 1940 plate for my 40 coupe. It's a one time registration that I think is around $85. They do put a small historical sticker on the plate. Also only need one on the rear and need to carry a current insurance card.
In ALabama, I had my 56 registered with YOM plates. Only require the rear but in 56 two were issued. I kept the other in the trunk.
Here in Massachusetts you can run them within a year or two of vehicle year of manufacture. If those years issued two plates you need two plates
What is the law on painting YOM plates? I have seen them painted to match the car color. Pretty sure that is on the wrong side of the law. But what about painting them original colors? The older ones did not have the fancy paint.
Every state is different. Pa. uses one plate, can be restored to original colors. ONLY used on antique cars, not hotrods. It replaces an antique license. Some states you can't paint them, not even original colors. Check with DMV in Iowa.
Michigan allows Year Of Make plates, but they MUST be the original color. It is also illegal to drive faster than the posted speed limit, change lanes without signalling, etc... I was denied once because I had painted my plate to match the car, luckily I had a pair, so one was original color.

In Wisconsin if you get your car registered with collector plates, you can run YOM plates and just carry the collector plates with you, but you're only supposed to run the YOM plates to and from shows or events, although they don't really specify what qualifies as a show or event. You don't have to register the number of the YOM plate with anyone, just have the collector plates in the car with you.
Missouri we only have to run one YOM plate. I have 3 cars with them. There are milage restrictions and you're supposed to keep a log book in the vehicle at all time. I've never been hassled personally. I also saw a gut that bought an old plate then got personalized plates that have the same number through the state. Then ran the old plate so if they ran the numbers they came up for the vehicle. He kept the modern personal tags in the vehicle so if stopped he can say they were on for a show/ photo shoot and he forgot haha! That way he could run like a 1948 plate on his model a for his late 40s build style.
Actually that is exactly how it's done in Illinois. They don't register the yom number, you have to get antique plates and carry them in the vehicle while you are displaying the yom plates.
Hmmmm, here in Mn you can get either collector plates or YOM plates but not both for the same car. That business of running non registered YOM plates and keeping the real plates in the car must be terribly confusing to the cops trying to run a plate number in case of a violation....
I can only say how it works here in Ohio, both the historical plate and the YOM plate is registered to the vehicle. If pulled over the police can run the YOM plate information and it comes back to the Historical registration plate number. I'm guessing that is why you have to have the Historical plate in the vehicle. Joe
